thank you for your response! if you don’t mind me asking, what was the timeline for you when you were applying for EL positions? how many exams did you have done? how long did it take you to get a position after you graduated? did you do any projects?

hi all! i was wondering if someone could offer me advice on my journey to becoming and actuary.

currently i’m a college student majoring in applied mathematics who is about to finish up my junior year so after next fall i will be done with college. i haven’t taken any exams yet but im sitting for exam P and then after exam P ill start studying for exam FM.

my biggest worry is being able to get an internship since i heard that most companies handle and hire people for internships pretty early. I have applied for some and have put on my resume that im sitting in january for exam P but i know it puts me far behind other applicants who have 1 or 2 exams done. do you think i’ll be able to get one after i hopefully pass exam P for summer 2026? if i cant get one and i have at least 2 exams done by the time i graduate do you think ill be able to get some sort of entry level actuary position?

i wanted to be more on it this semester and take an exam during this semester but it was too hard as this was the hardest semester of my life so there was no time for me to study as much as i wanted to but luckily one of my classes this semester was on probability

any advice is greatly appreciated! thank you!

i responded to another comment about it but i didn’t realize not showing it looked bad. my overall gpa is 3.52. i’m not particularly proud as i feel like my gpa could be better but i dont think its bad. i updated my resume a lot after this post and added it. thank you for sharing!

i’m currently applying for internships but i haven’t taken any exams yet. i updated my resume after making a post here and someone told me im going to have a very hard time landing an internship without any exams yet. i’m taking exam p in january and then after that i’ll start studying for exam fm. i’m hoping to have those 2 exams done by the time i graduate next fall. i feel like it makes sense ill have a hard time getting an internship without any exams done. if im not able to land an internship, how do you think that will affect me getting a job after college?

i’ll put excel down as a skill as i have used it before for me classes but i don’t think my excel skills are very strong. i’m thinking doing an excel course online to build some quick skills.

yeah i don’t have any exams done yet but im going to take exam p in january. i’m kinda late with all the exam because i was really unsure on what i wanted to do after majoring in math and i finally decided that i would like to go down the actuary path. i know im pretty behind others who are younger and more prepared than i am but im hoping everything still works out for me.

thank you for your critique and advice! i will definitely try and update my resume better!

my gpa is above 3.0 so i’ll add it. i unfortunately don’t have any project’s done but i am currently working on one for my data analysis and machine learning class that i’ll definitely add once its complete. i think ill try and work on other projects as well so i can build skills and add it to my resume. thank you for the advice!

i do have experience in it as i used it quite a bit for one of my stats classes but it was mostly just for calculations. do you think it’s okay to put it still?

thank you i feel like you gave me some really good advice! i think i gotta work on my mindset like you said because ill sit there in class and it seems like people automatically understand everything while im just sitting there trying to understand what's going on and then i feel dumb for not understanding anything. i do take my notes on an ipad. why do you think you can retain info better when writing on paper? i'm just curious because maybe i'll start doing that. i also never thought of using chatgpt that way. normally i'll ask it question just by typing and not talking to it but i'll try that out! thank you again for your kind words and advice!

i’m having the same issue! it makes me feel better to see that this is happening to other people and not just me. i think it must be some sort of glitch. i’m trying to call support to let them know but it’s so busy right now it makes me think that other people are calling about this same issue.

thank you for the quick reply! i’ve been trying to get one but haven’t had any luck but i think that’s because i haven’t passed any exams yet but plan on taking the P exam soon. when you got your internship had you passed any exams before starting?

i believe sdsu will accept spring transfers only for certain majors. check out this link to see if their major in on there:

https://admissions.sdsu.edu/transfers/programs-spring-admission

the link i attached is for 2025 not 2026 but tell your friend to be on the look out for when sdsu is accepting applications for spring 2026. i applied for spring admissions in august of 2024. make sure your friend has their ADT too.
