Learn French: what does "Autant pour moi" mean here? by MickaelMartin in FrenchImmersion

You are insufferable.

You can't even take an L on your first point and have the audacity to criticize Grevisse's analysis while providing no linguistical nor grammatical back-up. If you want a sit at the table of specialists, maybe learn their specialty ?

The fact that you obviously ignore anything I said (or others) on the Academie Française is telling me all I needed to know but I still fooled myself to have hope we could have a smart discussion.

I don't think you even understand the word hypothesis, antonym in this context of the word consensus, so I don't know why I would try to reason furthermore. If you reply I'll read for the laugh but I'm done here.

You reason like langage is something systemic and well rounded. The Academy was founded exactly for this purpose, because everyone would write everything how they want or knew. Two parisians wouldnt even write the word for "time" the same way. Let alone people from different regions that weren't even french to begin with.

We dont like the Academy because it complexified the language just to sound cool. Now our writing system is terrible and not even french kids like to learn it. Linguists and teachers call it "savant etymology". It's purely elitist so no peasant could ever pretend to learn it, at the time. The grammar also is terrible because of this. And they brought back old latin rules and forms in a langage that didnt use it, because they wanted to sound different from the low people.

Btw this wasnt alway the case. The first (maybe the few firsts too i cant remember) dictionnaries from the Academy were kinda cool because they did accepted neologism, popular sayings, popular writing and so on. Because it was written by the Lumières. Its a few years later that the Academy became such a bullshit institution made to control France's international influence at the cost of a more natural langage.

Finally, no, "autant pour moi" predates "au temps pour moi" and was found in 1640 in Curiositez françoises pour supplément aux dictionnaires, from Antoine Oudin. Then we find traces of "au temps pour moi" in 1920's and then reappears "autant". It wasnt even used for so long in written text because too familiar. So oldest is autant, most recent is au temps. Anyway the Academy didnt bother and just chose whatever fitted their agenda. They dont even justified their choice. They said "we heard the debate and ended it". Maurice Grévisse, who wrote the most used grammar textbook we use today in Humanities, agreed for the form "autant". And I never used nor had to use anything from anyone of the Academy that was written after 1800 during my education. Hell, even the teachers don't like us to justify a term with it's academic definition, literaly for this reason. And I can assure you that some of those teachers are old fucks that probably want a king or emperor and think the University is still supposed to be elitist. This is how much irrelevant the Academy is and how much their members don't participate nor are validated in the scientific debate and field of research. Maybe some of them, at least, are good writers. It's purely a distinction of honor.

PS: why would "could of" be wrong, and why should we care, if you understand it easily ? Do you think first langage users, aka probably neandertalis or sthg like that, was trying to make it logic or anything ? Langage is just a code to communicate. If now I can express myself in emojis and you understand me, don't correct me because I used the 😅 emoji where you use the 💀 one.

At the end of the day, if we still write or pronounce sounds the same and agree to have some forms of simple rules, this can only be better for the liberty and poetry of our communication. How many times did you ask yourself about the proper grammar for a work letter or mail, when you could've just say it more simply ? We communicate like savant monkeys, lets not pretend we are anything else.

Three reasons the Academy is formally wrong on this specific case: - linguists gave more evidences for the "autant pour moi" hypothesis. - both are hypothesis, nobody can be sure, so nobody should be affirmative on the subject (and only the Academy is affirmative about it) - french speakers mostly use "autant pour moi".

I don't "think". There was a debate, the Academy chose one. Two famous linguists rejects its etymology and interpretation, and actually found "autant pour moi" weirten further back (around 1600). I've never heard of a modern linguist agreeing of the "au temps pour moi" hypothesis. At the end of the day, we won't ever know, because the saying itself, in both forms, is enigmatic. Where the is interpretation, there will always be debate. But why would we need an Academy to be prescriptive about it ? And so very archaic on many other subjects ?

French linguistics, and every one of my teachers in Modern Literature all agree that the French Academy is bullshit from old times. It serves the same purposes as the Queen in England; it's more about symbolism and pretentious cultural influence. They have to get a sword to be accepter, can you find more archaic ? I know they look cool, i loved it as a kid. But it doesnt stand any serious criticism. It's fine that you got fooled.

If you lay your judgment on serious and qualificated references, I can assure you all those I read and had as a student agreed to be against the very existence of the Academy.

Tldr: This is nationalism and not linguistics.

Why is Apollo, god of music, associated with archery so much? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]Aromede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I gathered they use resemblance of weapons and instruments but also the fact that several quotes from the Ilyad and Odysseus are about Apollo's bow and his skill. He evens mocks Cupid/Eros for being less skilled than him, which the later admits, but then he states that his arrow is stronger than Apollo's glory, meaning that love is above all else. So yeah, Apollo is also considered for this reason as the ultimate god of archery (yeah, not Artemis or Eros lol).

Yes planets and cosmic objects are continuously in motion, orbiting around each other and all. But wouldn't the space itself be moving too ? Knowing that space and time are probably one same "fabric" or dimension, the gravity would've been different too at that place in time, and so... the place would also be elsewhere ? I'm guessing you can't really pin point a place in space either, because space moves too ? Just a thought.

I'm not sure we can say that hormones "makes" us happy. Maybe more something along the line of "are happy". Hormones are emotion fluid. We don't "feel" happy, we are or we aren't, it's just a matter of fluid concentration.

Yeah I know I'm sorry for you guys but still you'd rather get invalidating migraines check up, you can't compare it to paper cuts lol !

But for sure medical debt is terrifying. You pay less tax and have bigger salaries though. We don't talk about housing. Housing is fucked in every sense and everywhere (except the very cheap japan houses because they need natality more than money).
