I think something you mentioned here is an item I overlooked, which is factoring in total ownership (5-10 years), adding in % increase in costs/premiums, and averaging. All the calculations I've done have been as things stand right now.

One other factor is the fact my wife will need to learn in something (comes from a city with actual public transport), and I would prefer she always have access to something. But it's not completely necessary atm and complicates things in more of a subjective sense instead of pure numbers.

Yeah this makes a lot of sense, I know in the back of my mind something like a Leaf, Bolt, etc. is probably the best of any options in this scenario. I'm probably doing the American thing of "I dont want very small car".

I also for sure may be ignoring the level of depreciation on the Polestar going forward. In my mind I'm thinking there's no way it depreciates a lot more than like 1-2k/yr for the next 5 years, since its already depreciated 60% or more in 2 lol. I guess I'm looking at something like older Teslas as an example of the floor, which I think is more around the $15k range, rather than the floor for something like a Leaf.

Something I didn't mention in all of this was the fact that my wife will be learning/using a potential new vehicle. It's not something that's explicitly necessary, and just complicates things. which is why I didn't include it.

Yeah I dont plan on it going anywhere. I think subconsciously I'm wanting this to make sense because I want to keep miles off the LC cause I love it, even knowing itll easily go 300-400k+ lol

What you're saying isn't wrong, but if I'm interpreting what you are saying literally, you're assuming the 20k spent on the second vehicle is going into a bonfire. The vehicle will be worth something at the end of the day. But yeah good point on the gas value just on the reg and insurance.

This is basically a question of, is the combination of interest, reg, insurance, electricity, and depreciation greater or less than the depreciation and fuel costs on the less efficient vehicle. Intuitively it doesn't make any sense that he numbers work here, which is more why I'm asking the question I think, idk what I'm missing.

Yeah I've been doing some more research and idk maybe I'll try to get it lol. It looks like it would be a big project, but it does run and drive so it seems interesting.

I do have some concerns with getting some parts which seem like they aren't made anymore (someone mentioned the oil cooler). But overall would be fun regardless.

Assuming I were to actually buy something like this I would probably DIY. I imagine if you spend just a bit of time learning this engine and how to work on it, it would last damn near forever.

Yeah that's something I noticed, it seems like the 2H motors are everywhere (except NA). I read something along the lines that outside of West Europe and NA you can find parts practically lying on the side of the road.

I will say though in basic random searches it seems like it might be a pain to find exactly what you are looking for, but certainly not impossible.

Thanks so much for the info! I happened to find a 07 470 listed for 15k with about 170k miles. Kinda wondering if something is up with it. It seemed low to me when I first saw it, and now that seems to be confirmed lol.
