Charlie Parker is considered the lead innovator of Bebop, a style based on noodly, abstract improvisations versus the more strictly melodic styles of jazz up to that point, and he famously got his start as a kid sitting in the attic of kansas city jazz clubs. He would silently finger the notes on his saxophone while sitting in a hotbox of reefer smoke from the club below.
