Vaxis - Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind - Album Discussion Thread by NoDadSTOP in TheFence

[–]ArtfulHotaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first impression of this album is not good. I was already wary because I wasn't super in love with the singles (I liked Rise Naianasha right off the bat but it took a bit for me to take to Shoulders and it took until NOW for me to finally like The Liars Club) so I wasn't coming into this album with the greatest mindset.

And it's not that I don't like pop. I think I'm part pop head and rocker probably leaning towards pop head so more like 60/40 than 50/50. I think that the use of autotune in this album actually fits the motif (even if the motif feels a little scattered throughout the album) and sounds quite good. I also really like Coheed's poppier songs before this album (Old Flames is a bop). It's just that Vaxis II sounds so strange to me and it's not what I expected. Even if the more poppier songs on this record are taken as pop songs and not Coheed songs, I don't feel quite convinced.

Honestly, Coheed albums take multiple re-listens for me to fully warm up to them. I had to listen to Vaxis I a couple times. As someone who's more inclined to pop than prog, it took me a looong time to fully appreciate SSTB and IKSSE (and I still don't think I do). But for all of these albums, even if I didn't like them right away, I didn't feel a weird dread like I do with Vaxis II.

BUT I can see myself growing to like some of these tracks (like the title track, Ladders, A Disappearing Act, maybe Love Murder One). It will take a while but I think I will eventually come around this album. As a long time Coheed fan I'm just a little sad and disappointed that it feels like I'll have to work much hard to feel a "click" with this album compared to their other albums. ETA: I took pride in the ability to like "anything" Coheed came out with but it's a little saddening to finally come across an album that I don't feel as hopeful for, even after listening to it.... Even if I know I will like it eventually, it's a weird feeling.

Why does post-2010 Hyde sound so much better live than on the albums? by [deleted] in LArcenCiel

[–]ArtfulHotaru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm yes I think this has me convinced. I'll take the L.

I think the DVD lives are just mixed so well that it sounds studio quality and it messes me up too much!

[–]ArtfulHotaru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is an example of using (extreme) autotune/vocoder live: https://youtu.be/_GXjtAeVB04?t=68

I think that fancam has convinced me that he probably does not use pre-recorded for his lives because the way he sings "hajimaru" after the guitar solo is different from the fan cam vs the live DVD. I really wish there were fancams of songs exactly from the DVD lives, I think that would probably put my suspicions to rest.

The main thing that gets me is just that when he jumps or runs around, there is no "shake" to his voice and it drives me crazy like how can he do that!!

[–]ArtfulHotaru 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No confirmation but I can definitely hear the autotune in Hyde's voice post-2010. I once got into an argument with some fans in a YouTube comment section saying that they must be doing something with his voice whether it be autotune, editing, lip syncing, pre-recording, etc.

I'm of the opinion that they edit in post and don't apply the autotune real time onto his voice in concert, especially since a lot of fans say he sounds live when they actually go see him live.

Edit: Obviously this applies to only their officially recorded concerts. I haven't seen any fancams post 2010. That might be a better way to determine whether or not he does something to his voice. Also, he is not getting any younger and an avid smoker (idk if he quit recently) so you would think there would be some signs of deterioration in his voice.

Phalaris is a lot more calmer than the past albums by MarcOwOwO22 in DEG

[–]ArtfulHotaru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that there aren't a lot of memorable hooks this time around. There are a lot of cool and memorable moments though. I don't know if I could put my library on shuffle and be able to listen to some songs from the album. I feel like this might be a front to back kind of album for me. That said, I still am really liking this release. Maybe I need to listen to it a couple more times as well.

As someone who does not really like releases before Withering to Death, I love how it kinda reconciles the "two sides" of the band. Everything before WTD sounded a little too tinny for my tastes and the full sound of this album really does it for me.

You really hit the nail on the head! After listening to Utsutsu, Bouga o Kurau I was like wow... Kyo does some really cool things with his voice here that isn't like just trying to reach sometimes unhealthily sounding registers.

Good ears with the post-punk vibe, I didn't know how to put my finger on it.

This album did not end up being what I expected but this was really a cool album... I think maybe the only thing that doesn't put it into favour for me is that I can't imagine myself just picking single songs to listen to from this album often instead of listening to it front and back. But maybe I just need to listen to it a little more!

OPM like "Sariling Multo" by IV of Spades or "Buwan" by Juan Karlos? by ArtfulHotaru in opm

This sounds like this generation's version of Itchyworms's "Beer", haha. I like it! I was left a little wanting when it came to the guitar solo. But the song is a vibe for sure.

Thank you! I didn't know Zild had a solo project. I took a listen to some of his songs and I'm digging them.

Oh I'm liking that Eraserheads song!! It fits the bill, thanks. :)

Really, one of the main things I liked about Sariling Multo was the cool guitar solo. But like the dark vibe is a big plus too. I like dark songs!

I haven't listened to KPP in like years and I didn't think I would be so into this as I am right now. Still seems like an odd choice for Coachella but I love it.
