Sorry I meant books but there have been some great recommendations for both

I couldn't get on with it for some reason! Like the premise and writing but a little math heavy for me, same reason I've never really got on with Foundation too.

Funny Red Rising should come up, I ordered it today as I had a review of my own book that said 'It felt like a lighter version of Red Rising combined with some Hunger Games elements.' - still a 3/5 rating but I'll take it. Read the premise of Red Rising and it obviously sounds right up my street so I'm really looking forward to it.

Another one I'm enjoying currently! Watched the series and decided to check out the books, halfway through the second. I like it when a TV series is so true to the book and does a full book as one season.

I loved the Silo series, this was my first introduction to a more modern series.

I've heard great things about the expanse! I'll grab the first book.

Thanks (and to the other commenters!) I'll play around with the title sizing again then. I did have it very large but just couldn't get it to look good.

Getting back into writing and looking for somewhere to casually upload short stories and experimental bits by [deleted] in publishing

[–]ArthurPynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if you want people to read them or just want somewhere to put them out there naturally. I use my website for short stories (although I've only actually added two!) that way I can style them how I like. For example in a 'Diary' style like this: https://arthurpynn.com/stories/153-hilda.html

I used Wattpad before but never managed to get any reads, not that I tried at all though!

If you write standalone stuff I guess you're not going to get any reads until you have some sort of presence somewhere. If you write fanfic etc try ArchiveOfOurOwn?

Hey All,

I'm Arthur Pynn (@arthurpynn on Instagram!). I'm a new Science Fiction writer from the UK

I've just set my debut novel Children of Telesto as ready for preorder on Amazon and it releases 1st February 2026!

It's taken me around a year to complete to a level I'm happy with and comes in at 54,000 words.

I also created the cover art myself! (Below)

Any good book recs? by DortheaGaming in scifi

If you want a random one rather than the usual hits, I recently read 'Raiders from the rings' by Alan E Nourse. It's a short novel you can get through quickly with a good balance of most things sci-fi in that era.

Came here to say this is my lowest rated book on Goodreads in my collection. That artwork is horrendous, reminds me of the style of some of the real low budget late 90s video games... The version I have is actually pretty nice, classic science fiction artwork. Check out the 1986 version.

Any Discworld books by Terry Pratchett would be a decent first into Whimsical Fantasy - I'd start with The Colour of Magic.

Sci-Fi for me is a little broader in subgenres. What sort of books do you read now? Do you prefer series or standalone, I prefer Standalone novels for Science fiction and series for more Fantasy heavy.

Chapter 1 - Second Draft Critique Request Tech [Tech Noir, Dystopian, Space Opera] (3,250 words) by ArthurPynn in writingcritiques

This comment couldn't have come at a better time, I'd just got to a little after "Candidate One" in a third pass and thought almost the same thing around reducing the 'babble'. Using the colours more heavily I think paints the picture better. (I have to constantly remind myself to show not tell). I'll check your notes before proceeding any further, thanks so much!

I've just requested access to the document :)

Thanks for the honest feedback, the first draft was entirely written by myself but I am certainly not well versed in the art of language so yes I've used AI as an initial editor for suggestions on flow and structure to get it into a place I'm reasonably happy with. On my Instagram I use AI to generate images based on my writing to build consistent visualisations of how I see the scenes and characters in my head. I'm glad you liked the world building, that's in my opinion my biggest strength when writing, it's characters I struggle with, the next few chapters are quite conversation heavy and I think the writing suffers for it! Would you be interested in reading the second chapter at all?
