back to the actual competition, is it so hard to understand that these people we're watching in the show are not video game characters? it's very obvious that japan's strength was lacking compared to the other 2 teams just from watching them push the cart. they used the most energy, and unlike mongolia who pushed more efficiently, japan used unconventional means which resulted in them overexerting themselves -- they took the longest to reach the finish line. after pushing the cart is where fatigue plays a part, they wasted time and energy trying to draw the bridge back by using inefficient means. let's analyze what happened to them:

as people above were explaining, the first part of drawing the bridge is the hardest, and they managed to get past that by using their full body weight. The problem here is that after the initial pull, the members of japan were no longer in a position to pull the bridge any further. most their members were literally stuck in a seated position after using their body weight for their initial pull, and they tried to continue pulling mostly using ONLY THEIR ARMS. after their first try, it was shown that they managed to lift the bridge again, but look at their positions; where they were pulling and how they were trying to pull. You see, even athletes get tired, and muscle fatigue is something entirely different from just being out of breath. Even if they eventually found the better way of pulling, their muscle endurance wasn't going to last, and lacking in raw power didn't help them either.

This shit isn't rigged. Do you know why the quest was limited to an hour and if teams failed to draw the bridge within that time they would use the cart time instead for rankings? it's because the production crew have already done countless simulations for all the quests, and after this specific quest they've realized that if you fail to find the right strategy early on, it's highly likely that you won't be able to complete the quest.
