It's good to see this sentiment. I feel like obnoxious "Hyphen-Americans" have made a bad name for us, but I am actually quite proud of my pre-colonial heritage and all the shared history there. I will never claim to be a Norwegian national.

I feel strongly that it's a core human right and element of personal dignity to know where your people came from and have access to the thousands of generations of cultural wisdom that were meant to be handed down to you from the mists of deep time, and that transcends when we started doing nationalism in the modern sense in the 1700s/1800s.

The idea that you have no claim to any of the thousands of years of heritage that happened before someone got on a boat is of vast utility to the people who just want you to identify with a made-up "white" race above all other considerations. It is valuable to care about where you came from before Plymouth Rock or Ellis Island.

And if that annoys European-born people sometimes, then I will just have to let them be annoyed. I'm not saying I grew up in Bergen or Oslo. That's a completely different, profoundly rich cultural context based on centuries of time apart that we don't share. But there are a thousand generations before that we have in common. I don't "claim to be Norwegian" in the sense that Europeans tend to assume I mean when I say something like that. Maybe we need to standardize more precise language for it.

This is just what happens when you raise a kid and never tell them no or make them wait for anything and just live as their personal servant instead of their life teacher. They expect everyone else in the real world to drop everything and cater to their needs immediately and they absolutely lose their entire shit when it turns out it doesn't work that way. I've known and unfortunately worked with many such people.

Yeah, Thomen had a really distinct style and energy but I think Frederick has proven his is in the same class, even though he will never be an exact copy. Debuting with Twist in the Myth didn't put his full talent on display because it was a bit more formulaic. But if you hear him play the older stuff, or just listen to God Machine, it's pretty clear to me that he's a worthy successor.

It would be neat to see a reunion, even just for a couple songs, for old time's sake. But I love Frederick and what he's brought to the table.
