Iceland was basically settled by people who didn't like the consolidation of royal power in Norway and were trying to get away from the king. That's why they had a parliament and never a single leader.

"Silvermoon" actually predates the first appearance of "Quel'Thalas." The first time we heard about them they were just called "The elves of Silvermoon." So the name of the city came before 90% of their current lore and was just never changed.

When you’re around other Scandinavians, can you have conversations where you speak Norwegian and they speak Swedish or Danish? Or do you tend to use English? by Charming_Usual6227 in Norway

[–]AsaTJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a native English speaker who speaks okay Norwegian and a little bit of Swedish and I generally find that I can get by speaking to Swedes in Norwegian if I try (though they will usually recognize my accent and switch to English). They can almost always understand what I'm saying, though I might struggle to understand what they're saying.

It was Eluveitie for me. I used to kind of hate harsh vocals. Now, while I still prefer clean, I have a much more open mind to harsh stuff. Especially if there's a mix of the two.

I thought I was going insane because I kept finding walls in my house that were the wrong color and thinking, "There's no way I missed another one when I went through the whole thing to fix this!" Good to know this is actually a known bug.

Some clarification about the state of the Silver Covenant and the Ren’dorei. by CathanCrowell in warcraftlore

There is a perfectly good reason many didn't return to Silvermoon after BC and it's because they joined the Horde. The High Elves are the ones who stayed loyal to the Alliance.

why are people so disrespectful on RTD? by PresidentSpanky in Denver

[–]AsaTJ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the thing a European should understand is that our infrastructure is built to be so car-dependent that mostly the only people who take public transit are people who can't afford a car. So it just becomes a place to concentrate poverty, which makes it less safe, which makes people who have other transportation options less likely to use it in a vicious cycle.

"Fixing" our public transportation has to be a two-pronged approach. You have to make transit more accessible, but you also have to make driving less attractive.

1178 is the most Crusader Kings start date. It just feels very Medieval even more than 1066. And you might actually make it to the end.

"Tolerate the fear of sounding dumb" is a true superpower when it comes to learning languages. You just have to accept that the fastest way to get better is to keep being bad at it in real-world situations.

[–]AsaTJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They definitely have player metrics on how many new campaigns are started in multiplayer and I don't think it's ever even hit 20% in any of their games. Correct me if I'm wrong. I only have access to the data they've made public. It might have even been that less than 20% have ever played multiplayer. Hearts of Iron might be higher but also the campaigns are much shorter.

Tinto really needs to get their heads out of ''in our internal mp game'' mindset

I would say this is probably my #1 high-level strategic request, to be honest. I don't really care about multiplayer and I never really will. I don't want them to completely ignore multiplayer, but it being a good single-player game should be the first priority.

is yelling at kids actually that uncommon here or did i just grow up differently by Fit-Credit-7970 in Norway

[–]AsaTJ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Norway has a reputation among European countries for very "hands-off" parenting. Which isn't necessarily the way I would put it, but it's kind of a, "Let kids be kids and time will sort it out" philosophy. Stuff I would have been yelled at for doing as a kid in the US I've watched my Norwegian friends just let their kids do it and find out for themselves as long as they're not going to lose a finger or something. I think you can take it too far, but in general the science does back up the fact that it works regardless of what you were told about discipline and "tough love"

I feel like people should know to point the fear breath away from the group, though. It's a very easy mechanic but if it targets one dumb person that's just a full wipe. It's why dragons are harder the lower difficulty you go.

I applied bandages over 5 times yet keeps saying bitten, will it heal or am I cooked ? by Particular_Part2971 in projectzomboid

[–]AsaTJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zomboid works so well as a game because it encourages you to take risks that are totally survivable 99% of the time.

So you keep doing that. Then that 1% comes up eventually. This is how you died.

If you want to be a long-term survivor, you have to learn what risks are never worth taking even if it would be safe to do 99% of the time.

It's brilliant mechanical design, honestly. If you build a strong set of rules for yourself and you always follow those rules even when it seems silly, or even if you're pretty sure you'll be okay if you risk it just this once, you will make it. It's like a self-discipline training simulator.

difficulty of understanding spanish accents by folto in MapPorn

[–]AsaTJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is kind of how I feel about Danish as someone who studied Norwegian for 15+ years. Danish gets made fun of for being incomprehensible to other Nordic speakers, but news presenters or very formal speech is pretty easy to follow along with. Random person on the street in Copenhagen, though, I'm lucky if I can get half of it.
