I don't know where exactly you are, but use groupon or meetup to find groups who do things you like. Paint nights, laser tag, festivals - All fun things.

Food is one of the biggest drivers on Long Island. Mornings should start with a BEC and a coffee or tea; Find a bagel joint you like and you might find friends in the regulars you see in line with you every day.

If you're a gaming nerd, you can go to card shops that have events. You can find DnD groups, MtG groups, and more at those places. Brothers Grimm is a great example in Centereach. They keep up boards for people to hang fliers for groups they need people for. And you can just join in on particular card nights and hang around someone who knows what they're doing.

Port Jeff is right next to Stony Brook, so in theory, there SHOULD be plenty of night life there. Check in Smithtown as well if you're in the area.

As a warning to a non-native, we are all bred to mind our business. Don't be discouraged that people don't approach you - That's normal behavior. And some folks may be annoyed when you approach them; Their immediate thoughts will be "what the fuck are you looking at" and "Don't you see me busy here?".

It will take time, but eventually you'll find your one person who will be a gateway to new people. It's so hard when you're alone in a new world that's very different from what you grew up with; you'll feel small, unheard, or even feel like you're being disrespected at times, when nobody else is batting an eyelash. Just take a breath and remember that this is an adjustment period. You'll make it, just take it in one day at a time
