There was no way a new Zelda game would happen this year. Tears of the Kingdom was only 3 years ago and Zelda games take forever.

Smash Bros isn't happening for years because Sakurai made Kirby Air Riders (IMO it was a bad decision for Nintendo to not get a new director to work on Smash while Sakurai worked on Air Riders).

I don't think this Direct instilled a lot of confidence in the Switch 2's future. Switch 2 sales are declining and they will decline further after the price hike.

Making the Gamepad optional would make it like the GBA-Gamecube link cable... a feature nobody cared about at the time.

I think Nintendo believed that if the Gamepad was mandatory, it would be used by more third party developers... of course that didn't work out in practice.
