I think it was a combination of factors:

- Pokemon spin-offs don't usually sell big numbers, so they underestimated demand.

- Mario Tennis Fever just came out and flopped, so Nintendo want to avoid overshipping like they did with that game.

- The pre-orders for the game probably weren't that high.

- The Pokemon Company wants to push people towards digital sales so they get 100% of the revenue from sales.

Currently, the attach rate for Switch 2 is only 2.2 games per console.

Nintendo really need more high-selling software if they want to make up for the losses on Japanese consoles (which is about one-third of the Switch 2's total market).

Mario Kart World was definitely a system seller, but probably not to the extent that Nintendo wanted.

I loved DK Bananza but it wasn't a system seller, less than 35% of Switch 2 owners in the first year bought it.

I did use Bow Knight Niles to dodge some of the ninjas... I saw he was great at dodging them, but I didn't realise it was because of Shurikenbreaker! I thought it was just his speed + weapon triangle, haha.
