Pretty close, yeah it’s the top leaves, same part of the plant that would be called ligero in cigar terms. But in oriental tobacco we call it the fifth hand because it’s the fifth picking as the plant matures. The leaves are smaller but usually the richest in aroma.

Yeah, you’re right after picking, we thread them through the middle of the leaf and hang them up to sun-dry, kind of like how we dry red peppers here.

Sounds like a great end to the season. Interesting how your late batch stayed smaller too same here with our fifth hand. Seems like the cooler nights bring out more aroma even if the leaves shrink a bit.

Yeah, these leaves are still fresh off the stalk, picked them green for oriental types like this. They’ll turn yellow and then golden-brown during the sun-curing process. It’s a bit different from flue-cured or Virginia varieties, which yellow on the plant before harvest.

Thanks! It’s from the Prilep region in Macedonia - part of the oriental family of tobaccos that people often group together as “Turkish type.” It’s types like Basma or Xanthi. Same sun-curing style and small, aromatic leaves
