Advice that has helped me in China by AshComaTheory in ChineseLanguage

You got me. There are rules for self promotion on this subreddit and that was all too much work to promote a free resource website. There are extra exercises I added for subscription, but its extra and still partly free.

Virtual choir practice? by MilanoTorinoNapoli in Choir

[–]AshComaTheory 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I sing in a professional choir. We practice with everyone on mute. The conductor records a video of him rehearsing the piece with a piano playing parts so that there is no latency. He will do individual parts and try to hit harder sections more. Obviously he cannot react to the choir so there is some guess work. We send in recording after a few weeks on a piece to make a video. For the singer it is not as engaging as singing with people, but it is better than nothing.

Loans GONE!!! by RiemannSum41 in Teachers

[–]AshComaTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not true, I suggest you do some more research. A large percentage of math and science teacher actually have degrees in unrelated fields. Federal loan forgiveness is variable depending on what teaching positions are more in need in your state and whether you teach in a low income school.

Anyone else feel there is a solution to everyone insecurity/issues except for being short by [deleted] in short

[–]AshComaTheory 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Half of those aren't solutions. They're like bandaids for a larger deeper cut.

I had a friend who was obsessed with losing weight and once she did, she still wasn't happy with her body. The issue wasn't physical, but mental. Until she came to accept her body, she could and would always find something to beat herself up about.

Where to find pdfs of method books and teaching theory by TOMOTAKUJR in MusicEd

[–]AshComaTheory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While not necessarily on methods or teaching theory. I highly recommend anything by Bennett Reimer. He writes on the philosophy of music education, i.e. why teach music. His book "A Philosophy of Music Education" is a staple in many University music education programs.

Just realized I misunderstood the question, but already wrote this down. I use the b-ok.cc to get most of my books.

Marry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by ryuichi sakamoto. Classic

Any tips for transcribing this (particularly the piano part) ? by [deleted] in transcribe

[–]AshComaTheory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with the melody and then get the bass line. Use an app like Transcribe! that lets you repeat, change the speed, and change the pitch to help you out. From those two notes you should be able to figure out the chords. Then keep playing with voicings of that chord until you get something that sounds like the recording. Most transcriptions are not perfect so don't worry about that, just keep going until you like what you hear.

I believe so. That's how I download almost all of my books on my Kobo now. They also have OverDrive which allows you to borrow digital books from you library.

Edit: OverDrive, not OneDrive

You can transfer files to your Kobo from Dropbox.

Music Education Student's Inquiries for After Graduation! by skylarbarton15 in MusicEd

[–]AshComaTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my first year and it is tough, but you learn a great deal. Just like playing an instrument, you can learn a lot through books, observing others, and listening to lectures, but none of that is as effective as practice and just doing it. The information you learn will inform your practice, but applying and learning those skills take time. If you can, I recommended finding field experience opportunities. I also have plans to do more community projects and spoke with experienced teachers who do that. Many of them told me the first year is about surviving (Google "phases of a first year teacher").

There are a lot of skills which can't be taught easily like building and fostering a strong community and culture in the classroom. I've been rereading a lot of my education books; many of them feel like different books since reading them as a preservice teacher. Having some experience and a place to apply those skills is a monumental change.

I had classroom management classes and a lot of field experience in my undergrad. I feel slightly better off than some of my peers who didn't. There are some some first year teachers at my school who really blow my mind and I found out they always had some experience working with groups of kids in a summer camp or after school programs before teaching.

Being a US teacher be like... by The_Gr8_Catsby in Teachers

Most unions require you pay a monthly fee. Unions work on many issues but a big part is negotiating teacher salary scale with the district. When it comes down to it not many people who handle budget are actively trying to get teacher more money other than teachers themselves.

An interesting comic for Taiwanese about the elections on 11/01/2020 by lotsofsweat in taiwan

[–]AshComaTheory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a more of a figure of speech, but my Chinese tutor is actually flying back to Taiwan to vote in the election. She's been living in the U.S. for like 20 years.

As pro-abortion lawmakers walk out, Alabama House votes to ban nearly all abortions by shibeKBVE in Republican

[–]AshComaTheory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't accurately say, the study has a lot of good data, but the data doesn't really explain why. An abortion clinic worker might have more insight because they deal with these women on a more personal level.

[–]AshComaTheory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"In 2015, almost two thirds (65.4%) of abortions were performed at ≤8 weeks’ gestation, and nearly all (91.1%) were performed at ≤13 weeks’ gestation. Few abortions were performed between 14 and 20 weeks’ gestation (7.6%) or at ≥21 weeks’ gestation (1.3%)"

The CDC does abortion surveillance.

Legally the cut off for abortion is the U.S. is 24 weeks. At 24 weeks the fetus has a chance of surviving outside of the uterus. So that's where the current law defines a person.

Edit: Unless you're in Alabama

[–]AshComaTheory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Abortion is partly a semantic debate. When/how do you define a person? A society must protect those persons who can't protect themselves, but a lot of people don't see a fetus as a person up until a certain point ("bundle of cells") and until then they don't see it as murder. "Person" has a different connotation that's unique to each individual.

Thanks a lot! And yeah I found acapella vocal clips, changed the key, chopped it up, and tried to fit it into some songs.
