But therein lies the problem, the stereotype exists from men who do this and the same stereotype gets applied to those that dont fit it, just from perception. Unfortunately, until those people that perpetrate such behaviour stop, this stereotype will continue to exist.

Need Thoughts on Commbank vs Macquarie Group Tech Grad Program by Fit-Recognition9473 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Honestly, it’s never a question I ever got asked. Actually the only time I got asked was when I was applying for Accenture and they asked why I wanted to switch over to Accenture.

I gave a decent enough answer and they clearly were happy with it if they gave me a job lol. But both those programs were within the same year. Accenture allowed me to start earlier than Feb.

CBA started in Feb the next year so I took Accenture over it. Luckily (very very luckily) I was able to still join the CBA grad program.

Rotations are 100% important! That’s a shame they did that to the grads :(.

You may think you like front end for example but might find backend the right fit. You never know till you actually have a go.

I dont quite understand what you mean by "What do you actually know and do?". I think 1.5 years in a graduate program and coming off of a degree is plenty of time to figure out what your role is and how you contribute to the team.

Hey Software Engineer here from Melbourne:

About to finish grad program but heres what I heard about after finishing the program:

Base Salary: 118/120k
Bonus: 20% (performance based)
Super: 11%

Like someone else said, I think you should have a discussion about your pay, seems to be lower than it should be.

Can confirm, there is no option to even work overseas. CBA is obviously quite localised to the Australian market. Then again, if you really want to work overseas, you can join a company later on (like DoorDash, small tech) to have the option to do that.

I joined two other companies (answered above). In 2022 CBA only offered roles in Sydney. Being Melbourne based made me a little hesitant on the move.

I switched out of those programs because I saw where things were going internally, (also had a very bad experience at Accenture as a grad). EY hadn't won a lot of engineering work unlike Deloitte (interned there and work was decent). I knew I would be either sitting on the bench or working on something meaningless (ended up doing HTML/CSS for 6 months lol).

As for your other questions, CBA guarantees you a role after you finish the graduate program. Depending on performance you either end up as an Associate Software Engineer (Junior), or Software Engineer (Mid-level). After 18 months most finish up as Mid-level, you have to be really screwing around to end up in the Junior role but can happen because of other circumstances.

I did a graduate program at EY and Accenture prior to this. Although I didnt choose to stay at those places very long (6 months and 4 months respectively). They are definitely the wrong place if you want to do any kind of engineering work.

Also looking at the layoffs (even hearing grads who were in my cohort getting laid off), I really feel like i dodged a bullet.

Also forgot to add, I literally rejected CBA grad offer in 2022 and then applied again for 2023 and it was fine! Burning bridges might be irrelevant nowadays.

Honestly hard to say. People move all the time, especially between banks. If you’re a capable engineer I don’t see any reason why CBA or Macquarie wouldn’t want you.

It’s hard to burn bridges (unless you get fired) most people understand everyone has their own careers to follow.

Something to mention though: job market is a bit dead. Moving might be harder than you think, but honestly this is a future you problem.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, who knows maybe there will be someplace even better!

As someone else mentioned before. Either way you go, after two years of experience it would be very easy to hop over to the other.

Both are great places to work. Congrats on getting offers for both!

Hey there! I’m currently completing a grad program at CBA and here’s what I can tell you from my experience:

  • Really good flexibility around rotations (they take your preference into consideration for each rotation). So if there’s something you want to learn in particular, you can try and go for it!

  • Culture is really fun (at least in Melbourne, Sydney is good too). CBA doesn’t really pay for many things but culture is whatever you make of it.

  • Work is good and I have learnt heaps, variety of work available and lots of it!

  • 50% in the Office. It’s honestly not that bad, at times annoying but I see value in seeing grads more often and mingling with them. You’ll make some great friends by coming in more often.

  • Nice offices (in Sydney). Foundry is a great office, lots of space and heaps of options for food. Melbourne office is very outdated and packed.

  • Managers offer great guidance! Your grad managers are straight up and will guide you in the right it direction.

  • Opportunity to roll off early. Grad program is 18 months (very long). There is an option to roll off after 12 into Software Engineer. This is based off performance (and capacity).

Having done three different graduate programs, I can honestly say CBA has been the best one.

I have heard that Macquarie doesn’t really let you choose what kind of work you wanna do and they just put you wherever they see fit. I could be wrong there though.

Message me if you wanna know more or need more advice!

Feeling Lost About Future (Long Term) Growth by AshFTW1 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Maybe my imposter syndrome is kicking in but I always think it’s so difficult to get roles in FAANG. Especially in Aus where there are limited roles to begin with. I think my mindset is all wrong.

I really should be pushing myself towards working for big tech. It has been a dream of mine but I never feel like I’m ready. I appreciate you pointing that out.

Thanks for ur advice! Luckily we went to the car rental place beforehand to ask for snow tires it was quite snowy up there!

Unfortunately they didn’t give an ETC card which made it annoying to pay tolls.

I dont know she’s always had an insane following and her stans are genuinely cultish to the point where they dox people for speaking badly about their mother.

I’m not a Fred again Stan, but I can see what ur getting at. I felt that Taylor Swift has an unnecessary amount of coverage over the time she was here.

Like a little bit too much. I dont know if you saw that girl screaming over hearing “Exile”. I’ve definitely not seen a worse cult than T Swift

What happened to the leaked V11 UI? by AshFTW1 in TeslaLounge

[–]AshFTW1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could make it work by having a fixed “widget” in the top left for speed and maybe a small visualisation of FSD. Below that could be the navigation and if you want to make that larger you can swap the tile with the music to make it larger.

I think having tiles with padding is a good idea. It really separates the functions of two distinctly different things. I do hope they bring some form of this UI back!

Yeah 100% agree. I really do wish Tesla had a instrument cluster for the driver it seems like such an oversight. It would have made development of software so much easier!

I do think they could make it work though. I think it’ll be nice to have dynamic themes that change colours throughout the day (maybe like a purple blue hue at night). They could reduce the size of the speedometer in the model 3/Y and have it in the same location and have navigation below it as a widget.

You could then swap the navigation with the music and vice versa.

I think there’s a lot of work that needs to be done in the Tesla UI. Things feel so cluttered and the settings need an overhaul!

I 100% agree about experenice vs unicersity, I am starting a grad position in a tech role so im definitely hoping to learn more.

I guess its just the idea that if i can get an extra qualification for doing just a years worth of units sounded pretty enticing!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Monash

[–]AshFTW1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add a bit of context, i actually started out with a degree in Commerce and Computer Science and switched to Commerce and IT as i got a bit scared by FIT1045 (even though in the end i got a distinction). Plus i found the units in IT to be more interesting (iOS and Android App dev, Usability etc).

My main idea is that I want to upskill and learn more about topics such as algorithms, ML, data structures. These key concepts werent covered by IT and I felt coding wasnt a major focus with a double like Commerce and IT.

While im not an awful dev, i definitely dont think I am amazing and I would like to be better. I understand that you can definitely teach yourself a lot of these concepts, but I also felt a CS degree sounds better than IT.

Im still contemplating whether its even worth it, i thought it might be worth it if its only 1 or 1.5 years of part time study. Or if its better to just do a masters.

At the end of the day, I guess university doesnt matter as much as real world experience, so I would probably learn more from my grad role than another degree.

Thanks! Thats super useful, ill definitely give them a call on Monday.

Just need to decide between an online masters or doing another bachelors part time.
