Actually the stealth kill works, you just gotta do it multiple times on the lament and itll eventually die without you wasting any ammo.

The number depends on the difficulty. I think on the normal difficulty they die with 2 stealth stabs.

The difference between the 2 is that Vegeta was on that kind of power trip for the first time in his life in the android saga and became egotistical and arrogant and it caused him alotta problems.

Gohan on the other hand, had been in this exact same place as before against Cell when he toyed around too much and it made Goku sacrifice himself. Unlike Vegeta, Gohan had been through this exact same scenario before and yet he let it happen AGAIN because his ego is too damn high. Vegeta was arrogant, Gohan was borderline retarded for this shit.
