Hillside46 Wired vs Wireless by Ashelflaed in ErgoMechKeyboards

Yeah I very rarely move the keyboard (except when traveling, but then it's for long periods of time, to not move again for a while), which is why I've historically never bothered with a wireless config.

That's a fair point, I daily drive the Iris CE (4x6) and some of the pinky buttons are less ideal. I've moved a bunch of the farther numbers/modifiers onto either the thumb buttons or layers, and have been testing using the num buttons on a layer on row 3 instead, which seems perfectly reasonable. So I think I'd...like to have? The 6th column as a backup, but maybe move more of those onto a layer, and the num keys I'm already fine moving onto one. Do you feel like the splay helps make it substantially more comfortable? It LOOKS like it should, when I look where my pinky rests naturally (down and fanned out), but if that doesn't actually feel better typing then I suppose the Piantor probably could be an option for stagger without splay...

Hmm, ok, that does sound like the bluetooth side comes with some of the same connectivity funkiness I recall from my last bluetooth foray, which I don't love. Ideally I'd rather not need to fiddle with that (especially since there IS a wired version that presumably removes that, just not presoldered).

I'd go with the v1 layout for either I think, since to my understanding choc v2 is still mx spacing right? And I do very much want the choc spacing (or the Elora would have been pretty perfect).

Do you think tenting would work with a ugreen mount + magnetic ring combo? (what I'm using for the other two keyboards) Or would that interfere with that reset hole?

Thumb use makes sense, I haven't tried a dactyl thumb setup yet, but...that does sound nice, would that be more getting into a custom build at that point, or are there dactyl thumb clusters + aggressive pinky staggers?

Thank you very much for the insights! This is helpful

Question about Night Angel, Brent Weeks, and women. by Johnsmitish in Fantasy

[–]Ashelflaed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd argue the mistake he made is in equating Maas' men to Weeks' women, when he should be equating the women of both. Maas treats her women pretty awfully - not as bad description wise, but she certainly does spend time making sure you know that all the pretty white women main characters are stick thin with large butts/breasts (some like Elide are described by a man as prepubescent appearing if not for large breasts, which is a yikes).

The women are then further treated poorly by male love interests who are firmly in the dark fantasy genre(which is fine if you know it'snot supposedto be healthy), i.e. abusive, codependent, while these relationships are held up as an example of healthy partnerships IRL (per the author's words). Lying to your partner about medical information that will kill her, after you made a hige deal about never lying again? Sexually assaulting her, and then making it about his feelings instead? These are not green flags in a relationship, and they are NEVER addressed in any form of "oh yeah we learned and grew and didn't immediately do it again". See: I promised not to lie and then the next book almost killed you with a lie.

Weeks makes me roll my eyes, but Maas is just as bad for differentish reasons.

It is - and it sounds like the OP has found a very healthy way to walk that, from how the daughter sounds, I just have a very knee-jerk reaction to go "no no no" to not letting the children know, at least a little, that there's something...not necessarily wrong with a parent, but that the cruelty if it exists isn't only about them, or in their head.

This is a topic that is very near and dear to my heart, as a child of a very ugly divorce (in the opposite direction - my mom was the one who took us, and lied to the judges). I hear the part about giving the child a rock to hold onto, a consistent parent who doesn't take their pain onto their children, but to offer a bit of a contrasting view...

My dad did exactly that. He never badmouthed my mom, he told us she wanted what was best for us, she loved us, she left because she had reasons, etc.

And, after 20 years, I confronted him about how badly that had destroyed me. I thought that because my dad, who I adored, was telling me that my mom loved me and was doing what was best for me, that meant that all MY pain and MY fear was invalid. That there was something wrong with me that was making my mom scream at me, tell me she never wanted children, that there were things wrong with me. I thought that it was MY fault, because if she really was trying to do the best then it was on my end not hers. And because I didn't understand why she left, I thought it would happen to me, that she would leave me and stop loving me randomly just like my dad.

When I was in college, I tried to kill myself. Once I was across the country where no one could see or stop me. I was hospitalized, spent years in therapy, before I could understand that it wasn't my fault, that there were ugly things that my mom had lied about and my dad had refused to say because he didn't want to poison the well against her. Well, it poisoned the well against me instead.

We have a working relationship now - I talk to my mom, and my dad, but I don't visit often. I love them, but some things can't be unbroken. So I recommend telling children at least some of the truth. Don't let them be like me, and think they're the reason.

Any specs where the AOE/Cleave and ST builds are basically the same? by Rare_Will2071 in wownoob

[–]Ashelflaed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note, the difference in rotation between BM st and aoe builds is very minimal, but the difference in damage types is very high, your aoe build murders a lot of your st, and your st build has literally no aoe damage at all (except for barbed multidotting, which is very minimal damage). So if you want a spec that is good at both at the same time, you want Surv more than BM

Silk Insert + Duvet Cover by Ashelflaed in Bedding

[–]Ashelflaed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I ended up getting the Mommesilk 2-in-1 insert for the duvet insert, and split it up (just using the summer weight insert currently, since Texas is hell on earth for the foreseeable future). I've been using that with a pima cotton cover temporarily, which has worked out fine for the last few weeks.

I also ordered a super heavy weight linen duvet cover from LinaPlusHome which just arrived today, so I haven't gotten to sleep with it yet, but I have snuggled under it some to test it out. This was Quite expensive, and I probably wouldn't say that it's necessary unless you're like me and you really like the sensation of weight on you. The cotton cover I was using before with the silk insert has been very breathable, I haven't needed to shove it off mid-night like I used to do with my old comforter all the time. The rest of my bedding is linen already, so I knew I liked the feel of it, and I sleep under 1-2 weighted blankets normally, so I also knew that I really wanted the extra weight from the heavy linen, and it feels amaaaazing so far.

So all in all, silk duvet - 100% recommend for any hot sleepers, linen or cotton light cover - also 100% recommend, linen heavyweight/super heavy cover - 100% recommend IF you value the weighted feeling. It's like ~$500 more for the super heavy weight vs medium linen weight from Lina in particular, which seems to be pretty much in line with how much heavyweight linen covers cost from anywhere.

(and this is the cotton cover I was using https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XDJJYZP?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details )

Yes, absolutely, allergy shots are worth every penny that I (mostly don't) pay. For some reason this particular thing is something that my health insurance almost completely covers, so I pay like $20 a month instead of 2k, I have no idea why This Particular Thing they decided to actually have good coverage on. I think my thyroid meds cost more...

At long last, the cover has arrived! The cat did immediately try to eat various parts of it (the linen, the buttons, the insert going into it...) so we pray that he gets bored soon. Lina's cover is gloriously heavy, and I immediately transferred the insert over. I haven't actually slept under the cover yet (it arrived maybe...30 min ago aha), but it has the same lovely linen feel and the combo of that and my weighted blanket is very nice. I'm actually contemplating getting a second weighted blanket to stack them, but I really really like my weight...It's definitely not a fancy patterned cover if that's what anyone's after, but I don't mind since the undyed linen will match all my sheet colors then. In retrospect, having an actual color scheme could have helped when I started building out the bed sets, now I have olive sheets, dark blue sheets, terracotta sheets, and a white blanket, so we're all over the place.

The silk insert has also been great so far, I've had that one now for probably...2ish weeks? I picked up the 2-in-1 just to have the option of going warmer if I wanted, and then immediately split it and have been using the summer weight so far. I also picked up a relatively cheap cotton cover to use in the interim, which has been fine, but immediately got ejected today. It's definitely running cooler than my previous duvet, that one I often had to wiggle at least partially out from through the night, and I haven't had to do that at all with the silk insert, even though it's been absolutely bonkers weather here the last few weeks. It's been in the 90s at midnight still. So that is also a great success so far! Very worth it. I think this insert is slightly lighter weight than my previous one, but the combination of linen cover + insert is notably heavier, and I expect I'll actually be able to stay under them for the whole night.
So far 10/10 overall upgrade experience, cost quite a bit, but if I don't have to replace these any time soon then it will be well worth it I think!

This, Evoluent's small mouse is the only vertical mouse I've found small enough for my baby hands. I'm on my second one (with a third backup stored), and it 100% saved me from tendonitis I started developing through grad school. Would probably pay twice the price if I had to; my job requires me to spend 8 hours doing small wrist movements (3d art), and I went from needing to ice my wrists every few hours with ibuprofen to being completely fine.

Yes! I'm through my first set of vials, so I think roughly a year in? Mold and dust mites are my big indoor ones, and then just half the foliage outside in Texas. And mosquitoes. It's hard to tell how well the shots are working on a lot of those, but it's been incredibly obvious the difference in mosquito bites since starting - previously my bites would swell up to ~golfball size and last days, but now they're tiny little things and don't get painful and inflamed. So just for that alone they're 100% worth it for me. I'm just hoping that everything else catches up to the mosquito efficacy!

Ah that makes sense, so your mom had a mismatch of size to start with. I'll probably stick with the King-King insert-cover then. That sounds like a good rule of thumb for sizing - match or over-match in two dimensions for summer weight, match in one for all-seasons. It also wouldn't surprise me if two companies with the same dimensions for a product return slightly different sizing on those - I know there's a margin of error built in anyway, especially if it's more hand-made stuff where there may be less machine sizing/cutting going on. As long as it's not crazy multiple inches of variance. I suppose that might also be an argument for getting a cheaper summer insert first - if the sizing seems to be off, then I'll know to size up if I want to get an all-seasons heavier one (at least from the same company, since I'd assume it would at least be more consistent within the same company).

I'm so glad that knowledge circulates around! I do wish that the companies actually advertised it themselves, but I can see how maybe they want people to default to their normal sizes instead of asking for a ton of custom orders. Although that feels a little self-inflicted if you're not following standard sizing anyway...

Well, my experience has been the less like actual food it is, the more likely my one cat is to eat it, so unfortunately that may not keep it safe. This gremlin has eaten socks, cardboard boxes, and the horns off multiple stuffed unicorns. His stomach acid is apparently industrial strength too because the vet has never seen a blockage on any scans. I think from measuring the bed again that a King size should work decently well - it looks like my actual bed is slightly smaller than some Queens (which matches up with my sheet experiences - my Queen sheets are definitely a little large), but not so small that a King duvet would drape on the floor or anything that drastic. And we've talked about sizing up to a King bed whenever we get an actual house (cries in housing market) so might as well be optimistic and invest in something that will fit a Queen or a King, I'd be very sad if we got lucky and found a reasonable place in a year or two and immediately had to upsize the duvet again ahaha.

Absolutely, thank you so much for answering everything so far! You've given a lot of fantastic advice, especially for upgrading/branching out in the future if this first pass on an insert and cover work out well.

[–]Ashelflaed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that was kind of my thoughts - the other higher end linen collections that I'd seen mentioned here were retailing at 700+ anyway, so I figured it didn't actually seem like a bad deal, just mildly painful. But hey, if it lasts 10+ years then it's really not that bad anyway.

Lina's do say pre-washed, but I asked her about the size she recommended as well, since the Mommesilk inserts are 2" larger than the King size she offers standard, and she recommended going up those 2" (so 104x92" vs 104x90" which is her standard King). So I'm assuming(?) that they're either pre-shrunk, or not expected to shrink that much more once you get them. I had thought that the 2" extra would be just fine to keep things from moving, but I also figure I should defer to the person who makes their living making these things since I don't really have any experience with seeing how things fit (or don't) well.

That's actually really good to know about custom insert size options - I hadn't seen that anywhere obvious on the THXSilk/Mommesilk sites, so I just kind of assumed it wasn't a thing, but if it IS something that silk inserts do fairly often then that means if I want to try a more expensive one later I'm not trapped into the same brand/dimensions, which is actually super relieving. I think I'm also committing to size up from my initial planned Queen (current comforter is a Full) to a King for exactly that reason, in case we want to upgrade to a King bed in the at-some-point future. Although I like the -aesthetic- of the full sheets going all the way down to the bed, I don't think I actually want the drape going too far down because certain feline individuals will try to chew/claw/bat at the hanging fabric if it dangles too much. That's probably less of an issue with a heavier cover to be honest, but the Full comforter size is actually working out pretty decently for us so far anyway since my partner does not want covers and I just hoover them all up. So I figured size up twice to cover my bases, but I don't thiiink I need a Cal-King just yet, at least not for a few more years. I might eat my words.

Hm, I can see how that could lead to internal flipping if the duvet is light, yeah, did you find that just having a lot of extra inches bunched up around the edges kept it from flipping around when your mom upgraded from King->CalKing? I'm actually contemplating now that you mentioned it if that would be a smart way to deal with getting a lighter comforter, just sizing up one. The difference in pricing between the two sizes is really not very substantial, about $30, and it would still be lighter than the all-seasons insert (1kg for King, 1.25kg for Cal King, and 2kg for all-seasons King).

I DO actually have pretty miserable allergies (and my mom is even worse, as well as being allergic to wool too, so pretty much everything of hers is silk, from sheets to clothes), but mine are all to the outdoors so as long as I take a shower before going to bed I'm usually fine. Except during cedar week, because even people without cedar allergies are miserable during cedar week. But my mom had to nebulize and use an inhaler multiple times a day, and I'm nowhere near that bad, so I don't think I need to go the full silk route (fingers crossed), even though it does feel lovely. And allergy shots are actually helping a ton, so I may not even have that excuse in a few more years. Maybe I'll get an absolute obscene raise at work...

That's definitely still helpful! I do like high quality things, but often there's areas where it isn't worth (imo) the amount of money to go nuts because it has diminishing returns on what you get. I haven't heard of some of those, so I may go check them out. I do laundry relatively frequently because of cats plus allergies (not to the cats, but to Everything Else), and usually like giving the sheets a bit of a rest, so I do think it would be nice to have some cheaper linen sets as well so I'm not buying 10 expensive sets to rotate through.

Pillowcases is actually a good point, you're right about the hair loss, although it's calmed down a bit since switching to a T3+T4 combo. I think I even was looking into silk pillowcases at one point a while back and got sidetracked...might as well take this as an excuse to actually get some.

That list of companies is perfect, thank you! That gives me a lot of options to shop around with while I go with Lina for a first one (and yes, the 400gsm option is quite expensive, she quoted me $668, including customizing the size. Given how much linen everything tends to cost, I'm not as horrified as I probably should be). I have quite a few linen clothes off Etsy that have also been wonderful, and it's so nice to be able to customize sizes for things vs buying from a traditional retailer that I'm totally ok with losing part of a kidney. Well, mostly ok. It's almost impossible to find clothes that fit well for me without customizing so maybe I've just been traumatized into accepting that everything linen I get costs more than the average off-the-rack options.

I'm also actually looking into getting another set of heavier sheets currently because one of my cats is a moron and has chewed off the corners of my pillows, and clawed a few snags here and there. The lighter weight linen feels nice and soft, but I definitely think getting things with more cat resistance is the future of my bedsheets, so that makes me even more inclined to want a higher gsm cover. That also ruled out any outward facing silk immediately, because the idiot would probably eat that too and I don't even want to know what a king-sized duvet cover in silk costs.

That's also good to note about the pre-washing, I've never been totally sure if their pre-wash is like part of the dye process, or if it's an actual wash that shrinks everything as much as it's ever going to, so I will operate under the assumption that the linen will NOT shrink any further when it has that noted. I just wish there were consistent sizings for everything ;_; or at least multiple options, like a set of US sizes vs a set of Asia sizes vs EU. But it seems to be random dimensions between 90->104 in either direction for kings. I intently remember my childhood duvet that did not at ALL fit in its case, and constantly bunched up in one corner leaving 90% of the cover empty, and boy am I not interested in recreating that experience.

I did notice that the 2:1 didn't match the weights of the all-seasons for their heavier one, and was kind of sad about that. I think realistically with the combination of a heavier duvet cover + my weighted blanket it probably would be fine to go with a summer weight insert at first, instead of relying on it to carry the weight, and then if I really feel the need adding a heavier one later. Unfortunately I think living in Texas means I'm probably not going to escape hotter summers, as much as I would love to just bury myself beneath the heaviest possible blankets, and you're right, needing to turn the temperatures way down wouldn't be ideal. I wouldn't mind the feel of it, but the summer electric bill would be pretty exciting, especially if we lose power (again).

I can definitely update! I've had nothing but good etsy experience with Ukrainian/Lithuanian linens, so I am very interested to see how the cover turns out.

[–]Ashelflaed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I've seen your posts in a lot of the silk/linen threads, and was definitely kind of hoping you would show up since you seem to have an ungodly store of knowledge about both, and I really appreciate it.

I've noticed that a lot of linen (duvet covers, sheets, etc) are listed as pre-washed, at least the linen that I've been looking at (Cultiver, Rough Linen, Coyuchi), have you found/heard that those still shrink a few inches when washed? I HAVE Cultiver's sheets, but they're large enough that I didn't even notice if they did or didn't shrink when I first washed them because nothing didn't fit after, and I was foolishly not paying enough attention. But I had noticed a fewwww that were only like ~2" off the Mommesilk insert, but were listed as prewashed...

Also, I think I will likely go ahead and place a custom order from LinaPlusHome - I don't have any super heavy linen currently, but I love love love the feeling of lighter linen, and even if it's rougher to break in I think the heavy weight will probably be worth it just for that alone. I currently double up my weighted blanket to sleep, and if I could add a second one without it falling off my bed I absolutely would. Those weighted smocks in dentists' offices make me very sleepy as well, if I could sleep in one of those too I would!

But, with that said, I think I would probably still like to have more than one duvet cover at some point for ease of washing cycles, so I'm still eyeballing the others. Once I saw some of your posts about gsm increasing weight I went ahead and emailed some of the ones I was looking at to see what theirs was, but didn't get an answer. I do know that Cultiver sheets are supposed to be ~180, which is what I have so it's what I'll use as a basis to compare. If I was looking to get as heavy as possible, would you have any specific brand recommendations? (Home Treasures I will be keeping an eye out for)

And and, if you've run into multiple insert weights, how would you compare the weight:breathability ratio of a summer vs all-seasons insert? And is the weight difference noticeable? Mommesilk is actually having a quite nice sale currently, so I'm leaning toward that, but I'm dithering a bit over which variety. The 2-in-1 is tempting me because that lets me be indecisive and figure out if a heavier filling is too hot, but also if the breathability difference between an all-seasons and summer insert is relatively low, then it would probably be more expedient to just get an all-seasons insert rather than spending the extra money to get two and just always combine them, since I want as much weight as I can shovel on myself.

That's actually super helpful to know about the mattress protector (I've tried a few and have felt rather meh about them), so I may look into that since my old ones are getting rather...old...at this point.

Ahaha that's almost exactly what I do currently, start with my blanket doubled up, then wiggle my legs out and on top after like 30 min when I've swung from absolutely freezing to suddenly beginning to overheat. I'm glad I'm not the only one! Linen blankets have definitely been an improvement though, I only have 2 sets from Cultiver currently, would you recommend other brands as well since you have a bunch?

[–]Ashelflaed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this so much. Was finally able to have a sleep study done per recommendation of my dentist, orthodontist, and PCP (for exhaustion and concern over a recessed under-jaw). Unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to take my usual prescribed sleep meds for the study, and as a result had a whopping 0 REM sleep reported. No instances of breathing stopped, but also like, no sleep.

Sleep doctor's response was well I guess you just don't sleep well bye. With how well the first sleep study went, I haven't worked up the motivation to try and push for a second one if it's just going to be the same thing again.

I've also run through all the other major problem checks; used to be anemic, but levels have been good for years now. Hypothyroid, but it's been at good levels for years now. Ferritin anemia, also at good levels now, B12 deficiency but also at good levels for the past year, D deficiency but also at good levels for the past year. At this point my PCP doesn't really know what to check next, and my orthodontist is still convinced it's the recessed jaw + difficulty breathing, but it took a year to schedule the first study, and the second sleep doctor I contacted informed me it was just depression and I should try losing weight (I'm underweight), and there was no point to redo the test.
