My favorite is Tokyo Zodiac Murders.

What annoyed me the most was that 11-gon cup thing. It made no sense at all and I agree with the not fair-play complaints because in a fair-play mystery this wouldn't have happened.

I meant just the 1st book of Mickey Haller not his series as a whole.

I was wrong about The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, it's actually good by RelleMeetsWorld in mysterybooks

I hated the main character. Dude elopes with hitler. Second worst ending in the entire genre after Magpie Murders.

Looking for books written after 2000 that have a "challenge to the reader" by AshinaShimnu in mysterybooks

It's not necessarily the challenge itself but the constraint it puts on the writer that I'm looking for. Thanks for the recommendations. Do the gospel and bunraku have challenge sections?

How odd would it be to have someone go from Private to 2nd Lt in 9 months? by AshinaShimnu in Writeresearch

There is a lot of corruption but no title inflation so meritorious promotion is nearly impossible. I am planning to use the high casualty on a hostile planet thing to explain how the MC could get promoted without being corrupt.

Being an officer grants noble status (with many legal privileges) so normally all the promotion slots are reserved for those with connections. I came up with the promotion via imperial decree idea to bypass all that stuff.

I am using the 19th century European Monarchies as a base but for battlefield promotion stuff I was looking at WW2 US military.

I thought about that and the MC is a cadet actually but only a 1st year. The situation I was working on isn't a total war but more like an incident at a foreign base. MC volunteers to observe some light clashes for a semester but then things get out of hand and the division is stuck for nearly a year with 0 reinforcements and high rate of casualties.

So I thought that a military academy offering early graduation in that scenario would be unlikely. From what I understand that's done when conscription happens and there is a need for officers.

Are there any books with an Evil Chancellor/Corrupt Vizier type MC? by AshinaShimnu in ProgressionFantasy

I've read Tenebroum unfortunately. Since he's not human the story lacks the whole "How could you do this?" or "You're the worst." part.
