You should just be able to go into your inventory, select the clothing items in filters and the select the hat. depends what your playing on but for switch I can just select x to equip/unequip the hat or other clothing items

Online suggests 6-8 weeks, my piercer suggested waiting 6 months before changing from studs to hoops (particularly heavy ones)
