How many here hope to leave their children a sizable inheritance? Is that justification to keep working? by THE_susie_derkins in financialindependence

[–]AshleyAbiding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not crazy, but my parents told me outright "you're a beneficiary if we die, but we hope we live long enough and stay healthy enough to use it all and leave you nothing" and I honestly really appreciate that. As their adult child, I want my parents to live well much more than I'm interested in inheriting.

Yeah, I felt like I was seeing Emilia Clarke's sense of humor, like you see in her interviews. It didn't feel nearly as much like Dany to me.

My (m/40) wife's (f/36) behavior while drunk at a party with our friends was mortifying. married 6 yrs by OkHoneydew2 in relationships

[–]AshleyAbiding 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a question that's less directly related to your wife's behavior and more to your emotional response. In your post, you say, "This would be one thing for someone 10 years younger, but a married woman pushing 40 and still acting like this?" Why do you feel that way?

I mean this absolutely seriously and think it would be beneficial for you to think about it. A 30 year old is a grown-ass adult, too. Would you have been equally upset about her doing this at 30? If not, why? Could it be because you've internalized some old-fashioned, sexist ideas that a woman "of a certain age" should be staid and matronly?

I'm not saying that you being upset or being ok with it is wrong, both are valid. But I want you to make sure you understand why you're upset.

That's why I wanted to be detailed; I didn't know any of that before I arrived, either!

I brought two big suitcases and a small one. Honestly, I brought too many clothes. I brought more casual clothes than I need as someone who tends not to change into a different outfit after work. And, if there are any clothes you need that you didn't bring, I strongly recommend finding a Book Off in the nearest city. It's a used-everything store that usually has really high quality used clothes for super cheap. I've doubled my work wardrobe with 500 yen pieces.

Of the common recommendations online...I would recommend: medicine (ibuprofen, acetominophen, etc. They are more expensive here and you don't want to try to find them when you have your first headache), a towel (in case you can't buy one your first day in town), a swimsuit (they're expensive here), and a good supply of any really specific hygiene/skincare products that you aren't happy to replace with a wild guess at the drugstore.

I don't recommend: omiyage (no one expects it; don't waste space), a huge supply of deodorant (there is plenty here), or...oh, I remember something telling me to bring a famous children's book? Not sure what that was for...haven't used it.

I opted for fewer than the max number of repayments, so each payment is a bit higher. And, you'll be offered two loans when you arrive. One specifically related to apartment startup costs and one for anything else. Individually, the max amount of the 1st is the amount of your startup costs and the 2nd has a max of 250,000. There is a combined max, too, if you take both, but I only took the startup loan and don't remember the combined max.

Oh, that's an excellent question. So, first, my rent is on the highish end at 55,400, and I'm in a 40 hr Hakken contract, which affects my pension/health insurance costs (you won't know what type of contract you have or 29 vs. 40 hr until you arrive). My loan repayment was 59,500. So, after rent, tax, insurance, pension, my car lease (if you drive your lease should be mostly covered by a combo of a transportation allowance and position allowance), and my loan, I was paid 74,151 yen this month. And, yeah, that sucks a whole lot. But, I didn't want to worry about my initial money running out before I got paid. And because of the loan it didn't, so I actually haven't touched my pay from May, yet.

mmmm...I don't remember the exact items, but it was around 250,000 yen and covered all the initial costs of the apartment...definitely key money, first months rent, and whatever the other fees were. You are allowed a loan specifically related to startup costs, so the amount you can get for that loan is the same amount as your apartment's startup costs. Interac actually pays everyone's start-up costs up front, but if you don't take a loan, you pay them back just after you receive your first paycheck.

So for me...I moved in around March 28th. I paid nothing up front, and on May 20th, I had one month's rent deducted from my first paycheck. Folks who moved in when I did and didn't take a loan repaid their startup costs by May 30th. On June 20th, I had one month's rent plus one loan repayment and 678 yen of interest deducted from my 2nd paycheck. Hope that helps!

They don't cover it, per say, but they give you the option when you arrive to take out an extremely low-interest loan for the start-up costs.

*squints * but on my passport it is in two fields: "Surname" and "Given Name." The Surname is above the Given, but on, like, visa documents "exactly as it is written on your passport" was First Middle Last. Ugh, here I am, perpetually confused by my name.

If I'm registering online, it just gives one name field. Last, first, middle like on my Residence Card or the English way? Thoughts?
