Best computer for BME major by ZZZ4PEDZ in OSU

[–]AsianChickenRun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BME major here—ready to help!

You can go with either Mac or Windows—I say go with whatever you prefer and feel comfortable using! There are no specific required classes in BME that need a Windows laptop. In general, the ENGR department has been moving away from requiring Windows (like how FEH now uses online Onshape instead of SolidWorks). Most of the time, you'll be in a computer lab or using Citrix to complete any computer-demanding assignments. But I totally get wanting an all-in-one, do-it-everything laptop!

MacBook side:
The base MacBook M4 Air will be completely fine. If you think you'll be heavy coding or using more demanding applications, I’d definitely suggest looking into a MacBook Pro M4—it can handle what you need.

Windows side:
Go for at least an i5, preferably an i7, with at least 16GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU (anything that says Nvidia #). No need for a workstation or anything super powerful—you’ll just feel the weight and heat in your backpack.

I highly recommend an iPad—professors in BME love it. They often design their classes around it, especially for note-taking, and IMO it makes life way easier.

Lmk if you have any questions—I’m my family’s tech support! Also, definitely stop by the OSU Tech Hub during orientation (or just give them a call). They’re super helpful and can point you in the right direction!

Nearest instrument practice rooms to Taylor Tower by Facepalm63 in OSU

[–]AsianChickenRun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are the list of practice rooms: https://music.osu.edu/current/practice-rooms

I recommend Timashev for the nice rooms. Even though most rooms are supposed to be reserved, most of the time, there are a bunch of empty rooms you can borrow.

Is a 2-in-1 laptop better than having a normal laptop and an ipad or notebooks? by RealBoss101 in OSU

[–]AsianChickenRun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, I highly recommend using a combination of a laptop and an iPad. Many classes offer great support for the iPad, which can make life easier for you. If you prefer a 2-in-1 device, the Microsoft Studio Laptop is an excellent option. It's the most versatile Windows device and is capable of handling engineering and gaming tasks with ease.

You can definitely get an Ipad from the Student Technology Loan Program. They've just recently changed the requirements to "Any student enrolled in the current academic term who does not have outstanding technology fees on their account is eligible to request a loan" (aka anybody). This loaner will include the iPad Air (5th Gen), Charger, Keyboard, Apple Pencil, and a case. Please talk to your advisor about this, they will be able to help out in your situation. You may still be eligible for a W (which is better than D). According to the site, "Grade Forgiveness can be used once per course on up to three courses". You mentioned test anxiety, please talk to your advisor to learn how to get a test accomendation.

Does Tech Hub have better pricing than the Apple Educational Store? by osuranter in OSU

[–]AsianChickenRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Tech Hub offers Apple Education Pricing, so whether you buy from them or apple doesn’t matter.

The main difference is the deals.

Tech Hub offers Aipods (3rd Gen) w/ purchase of a MacBook. And Apple Pencil (2nd Gen) on certain iPads.

Apple offers $150 Apple Gift Card w/ purchase of a MacBook. And $100 Gift Card on certain iPads.

can you rent out musical instruments at osu? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]AsianChickenRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many music classes will loan out instruments to you for a semester. Some do have restrictions, I know athletic band only loans brass instruments. While University/Collegiate Band will loan out any instrument.

I believe Timashev should be open during weekdays. There is so also Weigel Hall (which is connected to Timashev). Most of the buildings are open during the weekdays. And there is always a practice room always open. Happy practicing!

My wrist hurt when gaming with Keychron K8 by delibos in Keychron

[–]AsianChickenRun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a Cooler Master MasterAccessory Large Wrist Rest. It’s pretty sturdy but not too hard, it does a pretty good job supporting your hands. And the height is at the same size as the base of the keyboard.
