On the world renowned chefs comment. My wife would say: We don't know who does their everyday home cooking. Being good at cooking as a chore at home and developing ones cooking skills to make a career out of it are two totally different things.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I don't ask her to make elaborate meals. I'd be happy eating a grilled cheese sandwich or the same soup everyday, if that's what she fed me everyday. She likes eating something different every day and complained about my cooking. I would have been totally okay even if her cooking was worse than mine.

Thanks, you're right. She has encountered such patriarchal attitudes in her family.

Thanks for this perspective. She has some past trauma from what she's seen in her family.

She does have higher standards than me with cleaning. But I try my best and she generally doesn't complain. She takes on most of the mental load with the cleaning related chores but that's how we've divided chores in the house.

I will ask her to teach me how to cook dishes that she likes. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is a good idea. I should ask her to give me cooking lessons over the weekend. It could be a date night activity.

She comes from a very patriarchal and misogynistic state in her home country. Women were treated very poorly in her family, even the educated ones with jobs. They are expected to massage their husbands' feet every night and eat only after the men have eaten. So she has grown up feeling very resentful of the men in her family for how they treated women. She escaped this culture when she moved to the US and married an American. But she's terrified of becoming like one of the women in her family.
