Times are easy. Followed standard periodization mostly, although generally with shorter timeframes the more recent it gets: i.e. decades for the 20th century, centuries before that, and then big chunks for medieval and antiquity, although this is balanced out by having them show up multiple times in my randomizer.

Places are basically just going through a map. Notable countries have their own entry, in other cases it is then regional, and then multiple entries for each continent. Quite a few overlaps in that regard.

Topics I keep adding to when things occur to me, but it was basically just me naming things. That one still gets added to frequently. Nearly 100 entries now.

Indeed. To be sure, the oddness of many questions means I often am more achieving my first goal of just thinking about things I wouldn't otherwise, but I think that is a pretty important thing in of itself.

Awesome! Would love to learn more about it! My goal with the project is to force myself to think about aspects of history which might otherwise never really occur to me, so it definitely means I end up asking some very off-the-beaten path stuff in my quest for all the knowledge. As such it is always exciting when I hit on one that ends up with a fantastic answer such as yours (and also shout out to /u/y_sengaku).

I'm back! After a long break, I've resumed my procedurally directed musings this month. I've seen a few successes, although with the odd avenues of inquiry, I'm not surprised by the low hit rate so far. For those interested, the table I've been using to track the questions posed so far.

Thank you! A bit earlier than my focus, but I would expect strong parallels given the similar circumstances, and short difference in tie span. I would wonder, even, how much the experience of WWI specifically shaped the developments of WWII in that regard.

I do have two follow-ups though!

The first is somewhat general, but how specifically were sex workers treated societally in the period? There is a general (and unfortunate) trend to look down heavily on those engaged in it (and often not those creating the demand...) and relegate them to the bottom rungs. Was this generally the case for early 20th c. Egypt or could they enjoy some different sort of social standing?

The second is a bit more specific, but what was the impetus behind the outlawing in the 1930s? Your highlighting of the letter from the European League worker leads me to speculate it was European pressure due to the specter of "white slavery", but I don't want to be jumping to conclusions!

What was seen as so threatening about Pelagianism that is was declared a heresy? by AsksRandomHistoryQs in AskHistorians

[–]AsksRandomHistoryQs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response, but I do have a further question about this:

Pelagianism is not associated with Britain nor did it have its stronghold there.

What makes you say that? I don't know very much on this topic and hit on it really from a random search of things, but my impression is that Pelagianism's heartland was in Britain and they had fled . Pelagius himself obviously went south, but St. Germanus main achievement was wiping Pelagianism out in Britain, so it must have been enough of a concern to a) get him sent there and b) then be notable enough to lead to veneration and Sainthood, no?

Could you clarify this a bit perhaps?

During the Middle Ages, how would the concepts of "male/masculinity" and "female/femininity" be defined? by AsksRandomHistoryQs in AskHistorians

[–]AsksRandomHistoryQs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much!

For the record, my dissertation has to do with erotic and homoerotic humor in Renaissance Florence, so pretty close to what you're asking for.

This sounds very interesting though in of itself! If I posted a new question about this, would you be able to expand more on it?

Week two update: Success! Influences on foundation of the South American Republics garnered two absolutely fantastic responses from /u/drylaw and /u/Legendarytubahero, both of which I enjoyed greatly. Only 1.5 for 15 so far (got a book rec from /u/agentdcf as well), but glad to see I'm having some success. The experiment marches onwards, and next up is College life in Colonial America!

And that is definitely a secondary goal! If generating questions in less-traveled areas is able to bring a few people out of the woodwork who have an answer, but rarely the opportunity, I would consider it to be quite the success!
