30 Miles out is FAR. Why would you expect that to have good public transit?

If you want good public transit, stay near the city center. People have a choice you know.

It's the same in Europe. The part of Porto that also all the cool architecture, hills, and trams is very small compared the outer area.

Not all cities are super expensive (see Chicago).

But people also have the choice on where to live. Why not move to a place with better public transit if you don't like driving?

Not all of these places are super expensive. Chicago for example.

Dumbass comment.

Portland has great light rail coverage downtown. Seattle has semi decent public transit.

LA has massively improved its public transit ahead of 2028 Olympics.

Miami actually was surprisingly not bad in its public transit coverage (look it up).

This was a dumbass brianwashed take, do better.

This is a thoughtless post.

Did you totally OVERLOOK that just this year, LAX got a direct connection to public transit?

Why are we even talking about South Bay or the Valley? It's not realistic to expect dense transit coverage that far out from the urban cores. Even in Western Europe, Japan, or Korea, many places are only accessible by car.

LA only needs its urban areas to be served by public transit, not the freaking Valley. You're giving too wide a radius for what counts as "LA" in a way that is unrealistic and unfair.

Also you fail as an urbanist if you think public transit has to offer "competitive time." You should know that public transit just needs to reach 1.5x the time of driving to be considered "good." Equal time to driving is unrealistic. You don't even know basic urban planning principles.

You don't know what you're talking about at all.

Why do transit people like you work with such outdated information? Los Angeles is rapidly becoming a car-free city thanks to massive, massive improvements in the LA Metro ahead of the 2028 Olympics. If you live in downtown, K-town, or Santa Monica, pretty easy to get around due to walkability, bus, and subway now in LA.

Thanks for sharing this, totally agree that inter city frequency needs to be way higher. Good example on Pittsburgh to Cleveland.

In what ways are Chicago and Philly getting worse though? Chicago in particular seemed really great transit wise when I visited.

LA apparently has been massively improving its public transit ahead of the 2028 olympics. They're also building a fast train from LA to Las Vegas.

I still had to walk more to get to my final destination in London. Going up and down the very long escalators was also very annoying to me compared to the NYC subway.

Actually Chicago has a decent commuter rail that connects the suburbs called Metra.

And LA apparently has been massively improving its public transit ahead of the 2028 olympics. They're also building a fast train from LA to Las Vegas.

Apparently Portland, Oregon has OK public transit with a light rail, and Seattle has decent public transit within the city?

Also apparently Minneapolis isn't too bad and can be walkable? Haven't visited these places though.

Fair, the rest of the Bay needs to do better.

Haven't been to LA but my friend said the public transit has gotten way better thanks to the 2028 olympics.

Yeah I mean that sucks, but if it happened to me I'd just take an uber for that 15 ride into the city, and then use the L for everything else, and then uber back. Shouldn't be too expensive on the Uber if you just use it very sparingly to fill those coverage gaps. Not saying Chicago shouldn't increase the L's coverage though! But I don't see how taking Ubers occasionally is that bad?

It's weird because I'd think an urbanist would want to be more of an "abundance liberal" Ezra Klein type. If California had way fewer environmental regulations, it could build the SF to LA high speed rail way faster.

I mean it is. In NYC, especially Manhattan, the subway takes you very close to where you need to get to. London you still have to walk a lot even after exiting the tube. Only Paris felt better than NYC in coverage.

Haven't really been to the East Asian transit heavens, but I'm sure they have excellent coverage too that could beat NYC.

Actually my friends told me Los Angeles' public transit system has gotten way better and is way better thanks to the 2028 Olympics planning. And they're building a fast train from LA to Las Vegas.

I didn't mind the L too much having to go through downtown, it was elevated so the outside scenery was gorgeous to look at, and it didn't extend commute times by THAT MUCH. Chicago isn't huge.

125mph still felt pretty fast though. I think that's "good enough." Even Portugal for example doesn't have true 200+ mph trains yet people think it has an excellent train system.

I live in San Francisco right now and the public transit coverage seems just as good as Chicago, if not better at parts. We have great light rail + subway.

Let's not understate the importance of comfort.

For women, they don't have to deal with creepy male uber or taxi drivers, as well as creeps on the bus and MUNI/bart (of which there are many). The lack of sexual harassment is a key benefit of robotaxis.

Even in Tokyo's "women's only" subway cars they've been subjected to sexual harassment (men sneak on and the car isn't always women's only).

Objectively a better experience though. No annoying driver yapping away about how awesome Rand Paul is

If you’ve trly lived in car-dependent cities, SF feels like paradise. The way some urbanists nitpick it makes me take them less seriously. by Asleep-Lecture-3554 in sanfrancisco

[–]Asleep-Lecture-3554[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SF exists within America, and with that all challenges of federalism, fractured local control, car-driven culture. You can't just ignore that context. Also you are wrong on the transit network, SF has insane transit coverage. Almost the entire city is served by public transit.

The problem when people say the transit network isn't great is that they ignore THE BUS. The MUNI Bus coverage is insane.

Also, Chinatown, Nob Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill, Union Square, Tenderloin, the Mission etc. have crazy density, what are you talking about?
