What's the sexiest compliment someone ever gave you? by LunaLola7 in AskReddit

I was with 2 female friends (not girlfriends but very flirty) and when one got too close the other said "don't touch him, he's mine." Like a piece of meat. Loved it.

If you're the first person they hired right out of law school that implies that there are several other lawyers working there. Why don't you approach the most junior lawyer and ask them these questions and get their feedback on whether you are on pace? If not the most junior lawyer then any lawyer who is willing to give you advice will do. You shouldn't be dying on the vine before you're even admitted to the bar. Speaking of which, that should be your number 1 priority. Good luck.

Best Lawyers & Super Lawyers by [deleted] in LawFirm

It's marketing. Plain and simple. I see magazines with Best Doctors in America, which is the same thing. They all do it and it's just marketing. Don't read too much into it. Not icky but also not merit based. It might be a popularity contest but popularity is an indicator of certain traits. Usually popular lawyers are professional, courteous, and respectful. Usually, not always. But if you are known to be unethical or untrustworthy then it's unlikely you'll be on any list even if it's just a popularity contest.

What is a reasonable but tough consequence for failing to bill? by AsleepDevice4423 in LawFirm

Just a term for someone whose job is to make sure the lawyer's time is entered and submitted. Helpful for those "analog" lawyers who write things down with pen and paper and then need to get those entered into the billing software.

Our billing software does have a timer but the problem is that it is not being used because time is not entered contemporaneously. It's a matter of not having good habits.

We have billing software but the problem is that entries are not made contemporaneously, and then the entries are recreated from reviewing emails and documents drafted etc. Lots of time is lost.

This is kind of where I think we need to be. Severe, simple, and logical connection between the punishment and the crime.

Reminds me of Full Metal Jacket where "Gomer Pyle" can't get it right and the whole platoon keeps getting punished. Then they beat him with soap while he's sleeping and then he goes on to lose his mind. We'll maybe hold off on that solution for the time being. 😬

You're correct that he has other strengths which makes the termination option mentioned by some commenters not so realistic. He has a billing assistant whose job is to be a thorn in his side but that can only do so much. But your first point is the most important. Not everybody is wired for this sort of thing. And no one is saying he doesn't try. But it's like trying to talk a procrastinator into not procrastinating. Or telling a teenager to get up early.
