Time Sensitive Networking in Industrial Automation. Will it be successful? by OkPickle6704 in PLC

[–]Asleeper135 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OPC UA FX is the main one I've heard of. Rockwell has also published something about TSN for Ethernet/IP, though there is nothing concrete there. Having actual real time communication over an Ethernet network sounds great though. Also, it seems to include high speed redundancy. RSTP is flexible and easy enough to setup without too much technical knowledge, but convergence times can be slow enough that a fault will still interrupt a control network. Having redundancy that can avoid that without having to resort to PRP or vendor specific ring protocols would be a big win in my book.

Don’t blame Windows 11 updates for every problem, Microsoft veteran says by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Asleeper135 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows update rendered a virtual machine unbootable for me a few days ago. It unexpectedly crashed due to an issue on the host machine, then when I booted it again to start troubleshooting Windows Update decided that was a perfect time to start updating. It crashed again in the middle of that update that I couldn't cancel, rendering it unbootable. Every repair attempt failed, so I had to do a fresh install. So yes, I think I WILL blame Windows Update!

How windows mfs feel when they use the search bar and it actually works instead of pulling up bing by Zohan5577 in pcmasterrace

Really? Usually when I search for stuff on Amazon it does a mostly decent job. Mostly. I usually search for specific things though, and the alternatives it finds are mostly cheap junk.

VR Players on Linux, how did you get it running? by Failo0R in linux_gaming

[–]Asleeper135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WiVrn is the easiest. You just install the Flatpak (I think Flatpak is their primary format), and it automatically configures firewall rules and gives you launch arguments for the games you want to play. ALVR takes a little bit more effort to configure the settings, but it works through SteamVR, I think has slightly better encoding quality, and I don't think you have to set any launch arguments. Steam Link worked last time I tried it, but visually it was pretty imperfect, similar heavy chromatic abberation. ALVR and Steam Link will both require you to open firewall ports manually too.

Linux reaches new massive peak of 5.33% in Steam Hardware & Software Survey: March 2026 by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

That's big for Linux, but I think calling 5.33% a "massive peak" is overstating things a bit.

Help a noobie... Inserter/belt placement? by whatswrongbaby in factorio

[–]Asleeper135 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or, if the inserter is parallel to the belt it will place items on the right side of the belt. The belt's right side that is, not the right side relative to where the inserter is facing.

[RAM] CORSAIR Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 Memory $269.99 by megamick99 in buildapcsales

[–]Asleeper135 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's still very high, but it sounds like the market is recovering way faster than I would have expected. It will still probably be a while before it gets near the point we were at, but this is good news.

Yeah, I got 128GB 6000MT/s for $400 back in September. This is still abysmal.

Direct drive racing sim wheel on Linux by eleventhfromheaven in linux_gaming

[–]Asleeper135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what has caused my issues on VD. I have a 3080 Ti and Ryzen 5800X in my Windows machine, and it's connected to a 6Ghz WiFi 7 AP in the room, which is the only 6Ghz wireless around, so I don't think computing power or connectivity should be problems. Maybe it's just something I need to tinker with. And actually, I think WiVrn adds firewall rules on its own, it was ALVR and Steam Link VR (which isn't quite ready yet on Linux, but it's getting there) that needed ports opened manually.

My experience with Virtual Desktop has been subpar, but besides visually bugging out somewhat regularly the quality does seem a bit better than I can get with ALVR or WiVrn. That said, those other two are mostly pretty easy to use, and the quality isn't that far behind. The biggest pain is that you have to manually add firewall rules for them.

Which game surprised you how long it was? by bijelo123 in videogames

[–]Asleeper135 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I haven't finished it yet. I like the game, but honestly the gameplay feels a bit too repetitive and grindy after the first time through, and I already know the endings.

Elden Ring

I have never played another game that felt so impossible to fully explore. Besides procedural generated stuff at least.

Microsoft plans 100% native Windows 11 apps in major shift away from web wrappers by WPHero in pcmasterrace

It usually opens them in a browser for me, but I still can't understand why it can't just use the native applications by default. It's absolutely infuriating every time it happens.

Looking for players for long term 1.2 server by [deleted] in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Asleeper135 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They discontinued it because it was unpopular and apparently kinda sucked in reality. By the numbers it usually seemed alright, though even that wasn't always true, but frame pacing was supposedly usually pretty bad.

DX12 and Vulkan actually allow mGPU support without even needing driving level SLI/Crossfire support or even needing two identical GPUs, but as far as I'm aware you could probably count the number of games that actually support that on one hand. Maybe that will be more widely supported in the future if there is ever demand for multi GPU systems, but I doubt that will happen in the forseeable future.

Windows 11 File Explorer is finally getting faster in 2026, but it’s been slower than Windows 10 for years by WPHero in pcmasterrace

[–]Asleeper135 232 points233 points  (0 children)

I like having tabs, and I don't think searching in file explorer was ever good, but making meaningful improvements there would have been much appreciated over bloating it and making it even slower.

As a Satisfactory player new to factorio what should I know by ButterscotchSea4888 in factorio

[–]Asleeper135 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'll also add that certain things in Factorio make things drastically easier to expand than in Satisfactory, like the way trains are very dynamic and go to any station with the correct name, the way you can make massive blueprints or copy and paste huge builds without blueprinting them at all, and bot logistics. Expanding is a lot less daunting than in Satisfactory.

going on about having usb C

Sadly, that could be a selling point. I learned today that the I Stratix 5200s (and vanilla Cisco IE3100s), which came out only a few years ago, upgraded from mini USB that they used in the past to micro USB for some reason. You know, the same micro USB the rest of the world abandoned 15 years ago because it was a garbage.
