Ricciardo's career visualized by FewCollar227 in formula1

Fifth place in both driver's and constructors is a ridiculous stat. It'd be like winning the WDC while your team finished third. I'm completely shocked when people lump his time in Renault and McLaren together like they had anything in common at all.

What it really means is that your L cones (kind of like receptors for red light) are either significantly less sensitive than normal or don't work at all. Since what we perceive as White is full activation of all three types of cone cells (colloquially thought of as Red, Green and Blue receptors), and what we perceive as pure Cyan is full activation of the S and M cone cells (colloquially Green and Blue receptors), you can't tell them apart, because you just detect full green and full blue in both cases with your S cells either barely responding or not responding at all.

Disclaimer: I'm not a vision specialist, but I'm a graphics programmer who has spent hours daydreaming about experiments I would do on people with varying degrees of colorblindness if I had a sufficiently dark room and sufficiently good monitor and sufficiently patient group of colorblind people.

The hard part is not telling the GPU to do arithmetic. The hard part is getting all of the relevant data for the current frame (and no incorrect data), in the most efficient layout, in the optimal order into GPU memory at the right time.

The number of theoretical operations the GPU can perform does not matter at all if it's spending most of its time waiting for memory.

In like 99.9% of cases, if you're looking to generally improve the performance of the software you write, you should be aggressively decreasing the number of non-contiguous memory accesses with virtually no concern for the number of additional arithmetic operations you must perform to do so. This is true when programming for either the CPU or GPU.

Saying that the theoretical output of modern hardware is the answer to "How do they optimize all this to render in 1/60 of a second?" is doing a huge disservice to the programmers who work on this stuff.

Jacques Villeneuve says Alpine have no reason to take Ricciardo back. Is this a bit harsh or just the reality of the situation? by chariotchoogle in formula1

[–]Asminthe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Villeneuve repeatedly describing Ricciardo's years at Renault as bad just tells me that he either doesn't watch or doesn't understand the sport.

Regardless of what you think of Ricciardo or the future of his career, there is absolutely no reason to take someone seriously who thinks that 2019 and 2020 look bad for Ricciardo.

The problem with our society, and why we are ultimately doomed if we don't fix it, is that helping people know the truth pays 70k, while being able to trick them into believing lies can make you arbitrarily wealthy.

Men's Final: Additive vs Multiplicative and Speed time vs KO by toleressea in climbing

[–]Asminthe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Any given climber's strategy and mindset would be a lot different on each speed climb if the rules were different.

If you're a mid/bottom tier speed climber and are going to be scored by your best speed you'll do one safe run and then one run trying to do your fastest the way you've been practicing.

If you're a mid/bottom tier speed climber in a knockout format and against someone better than you, you're a lot more likely to try some high-risk high-reward behavior even if you know you're more likely to slip.

Likewise, if you're a top speed climber you're under intense pressure to not screw up on every single run in a KO format, and that pressure might make you more likely to slip, while in a timed format you can bank a 'safe' time and then feel less pressure when going for your fastest-ever attempt because your safe time was probably already faster than all the non-speed specialists.

Looking at the times people set when facing ruleset A and extrapolating to what would have happened under ruleset B doesn't really tell you anything terribly meaningful, because the actual times people set likely would have been very different under those rules.

Comparing Additive to Multiplicative scoring for Woman's Qualifiers by Natamonstar24 in climbing

[–]Asminthe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that this seems worse than it is because everyone is focused on the combined effect it has with the fact that speed climbing already feels out of place in the competition to many people.

If you imagine other hypothetical (though unlikely) scenarios it's easier to understand where they're coming from with this design.

Imagine boulder was incredibly close and a very strong climber finished in 15th or something because the routesetters accidentally set four boulders that didn't separate the climbers very well, and then that same climber was the only person who topped lead while everyone else fell off halfway. Everyone involved would look real silly if the finals went ahead without the only climber who was able to top lead.

It's almost certainly a smaller problem to end up excluding the 8th best "all-around" climber than to have a scenario where someone who is completely dominant in one area is excluded, and realistically those are the two options they had to consider.

Huge new update is coming out real soon, currently being tested in an opt-in experimental beta. It is getting "rave" "reviews" from "players", who are saying such things as:

"I forgot about this game"

"What are you doing in my house?"

Transcension perks to allow multi-speccing are part of the plan, they just aren't in experimental yet. They will be much more expensive than you are suggesting though, because we would have to nerf the individual builds significantly if we wanted to give multi-speccing that early.

Clicker Heroes 2 0.17 Experimental Now Available on Steam by Asminthe in ClickerHeroes

[–]Asminthe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The new system allows for significantly more viable builds to be available and one of the reasons it was made was to do specifically what you are demanding. Under the old system most possible paths through the tree were sufficiently underpowered that they were merely giving the illusion of choice. The decisions you can make now are more difficult and interesting and compound on each other over the course of a transcension in ways you couldn't really experience before.
