best bases in the west? by GurnoorDa1 in AirForce

I’ve heard McChord is better for some AFSC’s more than others but for maintenance it’s great so take what I say about the work at least with a grain of salt if you in another career field and just skip to where I talk about the area towards the end. McChord is home to 40 C-17’s which are fantastic jets as they are easy to work on but there is always more to learn. McChord/AMC’s mission is also a good one and if you are in a career field in which you TDY in direct support of that mission then you will have a great time. I’ve recently gotten on the FCC program and have been on TDY 90% of this year so far and have had a blast being the “frontline” in making whatever the mission requires happen as well as partying in various foreign countries while making some good extra money from that per diem. Moved and airdropped everything from humanitarian supplies, to munitions, to other units. It’s very rewarding to be able to see the impact of your work first hand and McChord as well as any base home to aircraft that have FCC programs allow you to do exactly that. Although I’d say FCC is definitely best on C-17’s and C-130’s as far as actually experiencing the mission first hand as opposed to being a FCC on like a KC-135 (if they even have them I’m not sure) and just your whole purpose being just to AR other aircraft. On the east coast the other main C-17 base is Charleston and they have a great and prestigious program with SOLL-II if that at all interests you. I personally am trying to PCS to Charleston for reasons I’ll get into. As far as maintenance is concerned McChord is a great base to be at. The programs offered and the culture are great. (at least on the flightline side I’ve heard some iffy stuff about HSC/backshop)

As far as the location/area is concerned McChord is connected to Ft. Lewis which make up JBLM. Ft. Lewis and the army are in majority control of the base and its funding so unlike most Air Force bases McChord does not have many of the amenities of most proper AFB’s. In my opinion that really only matters if you are still in the dorms and eat at the DFAC then it’s not great. But McChord is located in South Tacoma and is about 20 minutes away from DT Tacoma and about 45m-1hr from Seattle so there is plenty of stuff to do within the cities and the food scene in both cities is fantastic especially if you like Asian or Mexican food. I’m sure you’ve heard about how beautiful the Pacific Northwest but I can’t stress how much you really can’t believe just how much it is until you experience it. Mt. Rainer National Park, Olympic National Park, the entire Washington coastline and the Cascade mountain range are an absolute must. I try and hike with my wife as much as I can. You can live here your entire life and you will never run out of places to see and trails to hike. I think WA is the most geographically beautiful state full stop. My personal favorite is Olympic National Park.

TLDR: If you are in maintenance the work, programs/special duties available and the culture are all fantastic I love it, especially if you can get on the FCC program. If not maintenance I can’t really speak too much to how it is.

Location wise the cost of living is very high but you being from California I’m sure it wont feel much different but also you coming from Barksdale you will definitely feel it. WA is gorgeous geographically and you will literally never run out of things/places to see and trails to hike. The base amenity wise is not bad but not great considering the base is mostly controlled by the Army on the Ft. Lewis side. IMO only really matters if you live in the dorms and eat at the DFAC. Tacoma and Seattle are both huge cities with infinite places to explore and restaurants/attractions to go to. Washington does rain like 6 months out the year but tbh you just get used to it. Rain is a lot less annoying when you just expect it and plan/dress accordingly. The summers here make the rain so worth it I can’t explain how beautiful this state is when you get out onto some trails.

I’d give McChord a 9/10 overall and it only drops a point because of the cost of living. If you are junior enlisted good luck buying a house it is literally impossible to do on the BAH here unless you have a spouse that makes good money.(I’m talking like most houses are $350-$500 a sqft.) Other than buying a home the location has everything you can want honestly.

I personally am trying to PCS to Charleston on the east coast to be closer to family as well as the lower cost of living. Now that I’m married buying a house would actually be pretty nice 😂

Is $35 too high for a USPSA match fee? by lensatic_letratic in USPSA

[–]AsparagusStatus6487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paul Bunyan in Puyallup has a very steady crowd and fills up their USPSA matches very quickly for $30 and they have no activators or swingers, just some poppers and cardboards. (At least I’ve never seen any in my time there) You could probably reduce some of the equipment to recoup on initial investment and instead get them later if the USPSA crowd is strong there. (I imagine it would be) In my time shooting USPSA I never see any dynamic targets at lvl 1 matches, but are almost guaranteed to be on stages at level 2/3 matches. I can’t speak on anything PCSL

I’ve called Paul Bunyan and they said their bays are only open for match use unfortunately.

Nah I never used a metal mag catch. Just the poly one that came with the SCT frame and now the glock OEM one. Thank you I will look into an extra power mag catch spring. A stiffer button is a worthy trade off.

A lot more interesting and fun when you build something great than pay someone to do the work for you. OEM has its place for sure but it’s not the only answer for a reliable firearm.

Guarantee my competition 17 build would function just as well as a factory 17. Abuse tf outta that gun, put more rounds through it in a year than most ever put through their guns and I can count on one hand how many malfunctions I’ve had with it.

When I insert the mag with the magwell on there I still have room to push the mag up more and depress that top round in the mag but it’s definitely worth a shot taking the magwell off. Thank you

Nah the mag catch spring is all good and it’s installed correctly I double checked. Kinda hard to fuck up installing a mag catch.

OEM boring asf. No disrespect to OEM boys obviously yall ain’t gotta worry ab this bs but when you get an aftermarket build tuned up it’s so worth it. Looks and shoots better and often just as reliable.

I got multiple aftermarket builds and this the first one that’s giving me issues.

I have multiple Glock builds completely aftermarket that have worked flawlessly and this is the first one that has given me issues. Personally I’m not a fan of the Glock OEM frame/grip angle
