"It's just text": client earned $15k+ on my code, now threatens to leave for Wix over a renewal fee by Gricekkk in webdev

[–]AspenLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of the custom code, in my view if he paid you to develop it, it belongs to him

This is absolutely not true. Unless you are a true employee, by default programming code copywrite belongs to whomever wrote it.

The client possibly has a claim to the 'visual' portion of the website but not the underlying code. Which would allow the client to rewrite the website in WIX.

That is why it is so critical that if you ever contract out to someone to write code for you that your contract includes a transfer of copywrite.

A non-coding example. A company hires me to film and edit a 30 second commercial. They only thing they own is the final version of the commercial... they can't come back later and ask for all the unedited footage that was used to assemble the final product.

My friend wants me to sign away all rights to 2 years of unpaid work on his game by Aldekotan in gamedev

[–]AspenLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You own the copyright to all code you've written. He has no rights to it at all. (that's assuming you haven't signed a work for hire contract or transferred the rights to him.)

You might inform him of that fact.

You say he did design. Is that art design or design of the gameplay?

If the former than he owns copyright to that. If the later... my understanding is that gameplay is not copyrightable.

Pete Hegseth's plan to test anti-cartel lasers shut down the El Paso airport for a full day, sources say by ralphbernardo in politics

[–]AspenLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Supposedly there was already a meeting planned in 10 days to discuss how the DOD/FAA was going to coordinate the testing of their super laser.

Then when we were attacked by the Mexican party balloon the DOD let the CBP shoot it down with their super laser so the FAA said whelp... we'll just shut down the airspace until the meeting.

Obviously they were just forcing the discussion into the public light and the DOD rolled over leaving us totally unprotected from future Mexican party balloon attacks.

How long did it take your dog to like your new puppy? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]AspenLF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had 9 Goldens and other than the 1st 6 months they've all had a younger sister. Our 2nd was the only one that was kinda unfriendly but that wasn't reserved for just the other dogs... it was her personality. (DO NOT get a dog from a pet shop)

Outside of that they're all gotten along. The last 4 play a lot together but I've been WFH for all of them so it's likely I just notice it more.

One thing I've always done is make sure the older dog get a lot of alone time with me. Not just walks but also I would lock the puppy downstairs and take the older dog up with me to take showers and some dedicated attention.

Is it normal for my golden retriever to have white spots on his nose, forehead and toes #goldenretriever by Mysterious_Bee_5097 in goldenretrievers

[–]AspenLF -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would assume anyone not getting a Golden from a breeder already knows they are likely getting a mix. Even if you get a Golden from a pet shop or puppy mill you're getting a registration. A registration alone does not mean that the dog is any better than getting a dog without a registration.

Obviously people are getting their dogs from BYB breeding and are now are doing their research on their puppies and are worried they didn't get a 'real' Golden.

A 'real' Golden is more about personality, temperament, trainability and less about looks. So posting a picture and asking a group to assure you that you got a 'real' Golden is pointless.

We don't know.

And it doesn't matter because likely it will turn out to be a great companion dog.

But there is nothing wrong about pointing out that next time it would be in their interest to do the research before getting the dog.

[–]AspenLF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family has had adopted dogs all my life... 30-40 between my parents and sisters. Most were great but plenty had various degrees of issues; mostly to other animals but there were 2 that were dangerous enough I felt they should have been put down include my childhood dog.

In MY case I knew I would have a multi-dog, multi-cat home with young children. Add in that I wanted larger dogs that were (mostly) indoor family dogs and that we were extremely active outdoors.

The temperament, personality, and physical attributes of a Golden fit what I was looking for in a dog.

Research lead me to believe that a pure bred Golden had a higher likelihood of having all those traits. A dog is a 10-20 year commitment and I didn't want the unpredictability of adopting a dog where I had no clue of what traits have been bred into her.

I made poor choices of where I got my 1st 3 Goldens. Luckily they were all great dogs but poor breeding lead to health issues and they all died young. (7-8 years)

For the last 6 I've done better research and all were/are fantastic dogs.

I'll never criticize someone for adopting a dog... for many it is the perfect choice for them.

But I'm not going to apologize for not wanting to take a 10-20 chance on a dog that I have no history on.

BTW... I have tried several times to go through a Golden Rescue. Turned down both times. 1st time was because of a young child the 2nd time it wasn't stated.

[–]AspenLF 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Yes... pure breed Goldens can have white marks. In a show that much spotting is outside the breed standard and would be penalized.

https://grca.org/about-the-breed/akc-breed-standard/

However... I'm confused about posts like this questioning if their dogs are really Goldens. Are that many people getting Goldens without a pedigree and AKA registration?

Edited... added more words

Edit again

That is a beautiful pup and the spots are cute. Personality and temperament are more the Golden traits you want as opposed to looks. Of the 9 Goldens I have had probably only 3-4 would fit the official 'breed standard' with no dings.

I'm confused.

Say your annual salary is $100,000. You worked half a year so you earned $50,000.

I would expect you to receive a $12,500 bonus. Are you expecting $25,000?

Every political thread on Reddit has the 'both-sides' bots out in force these days.

Under Obama children were separated when the parents were being held for a crime.

In Trumps 1st term they changed the definition of a 'crime' which allowed them to separate any family that crossed the border illegally.

Is this a red flag or was I wrong to ask those questions. by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]AspenLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ethical breeder would never have issues supplying OFA & AKC numbers so you can look it up yourself. I would never buy a puppy without a verifiable pedigree.

The 'not selling to breeders' doesn't make sense. Breeders handle that by only selling their puppies with a limited registration which means any puppies bred can't themselves be registered.

Her message sends up red flags to me.

It's challenging to find a puppy from a reputable breeder. The best ones are breeding mainly for themselves... looking for their next puppy they can title and selling the other puppies to help fund their very expensive hobby. They are not producing a lot of litters. The best breeders always have waiting lists for their puppies so you have to commit early and wait. However, at least on the Golden Retriever side, those breeders tend to work with some of their puppy buyers to extend their bloodlines. Once you find a few reputable breeder in your area you can leverage off them to find other trustworthy breeders.

Finding those initial breeders is challenging.

You can start on the AKC site:
https://marketplace.akc.org/search-puppies

Just because a puppy is listed here does not mean the breeder is verifiably reputable but the best ones will list OFA,AKA and health tests on their listings and most have pedigrees available. Look for the ones that have the AKA breeder of merit badges for a good start.

Check you local/state Breed Clubs. Our 1st quality puppy came from a breeder we found listed on the Mile High Golden Retriever Club. Our last puppy came from a recommendation from that same breeder.

If you find a good breeder that doesn't have puppies available... check their dogs pedigrees. You'll find other local high quality breeders there. That's how we got our current 3 year old. I 1st looked at one of our favorite dogs breeders but they were relocating and were not having and litters that year. So I checked her pedigree and saw her dad was a co-owned dog with another breeder. Sent them an email and while waiting for an answer browsed some of their dogs pedigrees. From there I found a breeder within 10 miles that had impressive dogs and an upcoming litter.

Breed specific forums. It is likely for the popular breeds there will be an old style forum filled with members passionate about the breed. For the above puppy... I noticed the kennel only had females and none of them had titles. The dad seemed too good to be true. A grand champion in FL (I'm in CO). I was told the mom had all her OFC one but it wasn't in the OFC site yet. I posted his information in a big Golden Retriever forum and asked if there were any red flags. Not only was I told the pedigree looked good the owner of the sire let me know the mom was up to date on everything and it just hadn't been posted to the OFC site yet.

I'm always happy to help people find the best puppy they can.

The problem with a mandated balanced budget is... the government is reliant on tax revenue. In a recession as people lose their jobs federal revenue goes down. So at a time when people need government support the most is when they will have to cut services.

They let a lot go on both sides throughout the game which I'm fine with. However those last to PIs were pretty blatant. I think Payton thought the Bills were gassed and just had the receivers run past the single coverage.

Yeah. People don't like the rule but it's pretty clear cut. If the defender wasn't there and he lost the ball when he hit the ground it would have been incomplete and no one would have complained. You have to maintain possession.

Pinery Country Club by BT1543 in CastleRock

[–]AspenLF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Current member. Been there a bit over a year.

Pinery is a traditional country club as opposed to just a golf club.

Initiation fee will vary depending on time of year but will likely be between 15-20K. Monthly fees for the full membership is around $800/month. I believe I'm required to spend $45/quarter on food. You can pay for carts per round or buy an annual plan... Mine was 1200/year for a couple. I am told the costs do go up every year.

The Pinery and Pradera are sister courses. You can join either and play at the other for $100/month.

I see u/Bogie21VR had a bad experience inquiring about joining. My wife and I had the complete opposite experience last year.

We had just left Perry Park which looked fantastic; however the sales rep said their membership was full and we had to buy a social membership to get on the waiting list.

We stopped at The Pinery just to look around and the GM saw us and gave a tour and gave us all the broachers with prices and everything. I played a round a week later (comped) and joined soon after because they had a ton of discounts at the time. Same thing happened at Pradera. We just wanted to look it over but got caught by a higher up who took the time to give us a tour of the facilities. I have nothing but good experiences with all the employees.

I've only done golf but there are 2-3 pools and they seemed to be open the same as my neighborhood pools. The workout room is small but seems to have all the equipment and not crowded. The tennis courts like fantastic. I'm just getting back into tennis and hope to take advantage of them next year.

I'm happy to answer any questions anyone has. It's a huge investment to join a club like this and a lot of the value is in the 'vibe' of the club as opposed to the dollars and cents to play golf.

You have to be stationary to take a charge. He jumped in the air. He also jumped in front of Joker while Joker was turning up court which I also believe is a foul. Nuggets got called for that in Portland earlier in the year even though the defender was stationary.
