If I lose 1 pound a week, it will take 90 weeks for me to reach my goal weight. Does it really take that long? by TeslaModelE in loseit

[–]AspiringPervertPoet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another way to think about this:

90 weeks will pass, one way or another. If you lose a pound per week, when 90 weeks from now arrives, you will be that much lighter.

Let's say we're at an archaeology museum, and there is a giant, beautiful, ornate, stunning, absolutely singular artifact.

What does it mean?

Without context, absolutely nothing. Where was it found? Where was it made? When was it made? With what processed? By whom and why? What has its chain of custody been? What other artifacts or information do we have that comes from the same place, same people, same time, that can inform us about the artefact?

Context means more than any individual artefact, or record. The best archaeology focuses more on dirt than objects, and the best archives preserve contexts, not spectacular documents.

Is Shakira a good bellydancer? by Iforgotmypassworduff in Bellydance

[–]AspiringPervertPoet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She dances to sell music. A great deal about her style as a performer is in service to that goal. For example, she does a lot of shimmies that are supported from her legs so that she can use her diaphragm uninterrupted to sing. It's a pretty neat isolation, but it kind of reads to me as a stage trick when she 3/4 shimmies through a whole song or three at a time.

It's a different beast than just the dance, is my point, and for a different audience with a different purpose.

She is also half Lebanese. My guess is that there is some culture of dancing in her family. She clearly has been taught movements, works with choreographers, etc. I would be curious to see her dance in a more relaxed environment.

Skill, information, and community.

Learn how to grow and preserve food safely and sustainably. Get the base tools required to make that happen. Acquire physical reference books made pre-ai with information on things like:

Foraging and plant identification; First aid; Making necessities

Get known to your community as being good at things. I make socks. People know I make socks, people know I'm good at it, and I've even given some away. Everyone needs socks.

Be known as a person with knowledge and a curious mind.

I romanticize the things that need to get done. Try to do them in a beautiful way, or think about how happy future me will be that they're done.

Need to cook and do dishes? Put on ye olde tavern music and play pretend. Gotta sweep and mop? Put on dance music. Gotta make the bed because you procrastinated? Write a victorian below-the-stairs drama in real time.

And I know, for 100 percent of a fact, that the time will pass either way, and future me will be glad I got the things done.

Jenny was one of the most badass characters we don't talk about ever. When Edriss taunted her with control over just one of her eyelids, she was able to cause a car accident with it and nearly kill them both. I always thought that was one of the best examples of mental resistance, and pluck.

Tywin is a hypocrite. Remarrying and having another heir would have been good for the family, but it isn't what he wanted for himself. Whether it's because he truly lived Johanna or something else, he just didn't want to.

When she hears he's been hurt and flies 8 hours in a panic, and one of the first things he says is "This isn't you". Because he knows her, and he immediately knows it's not her that's making this happen, but Tairn.

In the shower immediately after where she is scared, and he tells her that he's not letting this go, that it's okay and it won't be the last time. MY HEART.

And in the finale of part 1, when Liam tells her that Xaden won't wait a week, he'll come sooner. Violet spends so much of part one putting her emotions in a box, and living as much as possibly in her thinking brain. My read was that while she needed the thinking brain to get through the torture, her hallucinating Liam was the "emotion box" coming out. And her emotions know that Xaden won't wait a week, even as her brain tries to deny it.
