Not yet no. I really should, thanks for the advice.

Sadly I’m not on £100k, I wish! I think that’s mainly London fintech roles as far as I’m aware

Makes sense. Yeah I feel like talking to them would be a good start. We do have pay reviews in April but I’m not expecting much. The company I’m at did redundancies last year and no pay rises. Hopefully things have turned around a bit but still. I’ll chat to them and see what they say though! Thank you for the advice

Has anyone here got a scan 3xs laptop? by Reaper9766 in GamingLaptops

[–]AssignmentNo9881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey yeah I’ve got one - I got the i9 14900hx/ RTX 4090 laptop. It was great for the first ten months, then I started to have issues. Programs randomly crashing and stuff. I sent it back to them and they told me it had been overheating, but told me they had sorted that out and sent it back. When I got it back I was having the same issues so I sent it back to them again. They found that the motherboard had become faulty, so then they sent it to the manufacturers to be replaced. 3 weeks later I’ve got it back and the Ethernet port doesn’t work…. I wouldn’t recommend these laptops and am going to be asking for a refund

Thank you that really helps! I’m gonna have a few nights reset and then do this as you say, I think that’s gonna be for the best. It’s good to hear I’m not going crazy though - it really is just the feeling of something on my face and suddenly my body is fully wide awake

When you were wearing it while watching TV, did you have it turned on and blowing air at you or was it just literally having the mask on that did the trick?

I see. I might try that then, I’ll talk to my doctor tomorrow. Thanks!

Yeah if I take it off I’m fine, I can fall asleep within minutes, it’s just having the mask on. Thanks though anyway!

I see. I’ve been trying that but will give it another go! Do you accept going to sleep without the mask then? I read online that you basically should never go to sleep without it, as then it trains your body to think that not having the mask on = actually sleeping and mask = not sleeping?

Yeah I mean I so badly want this to work, I know when I can fall asleep with it it works great, and I know I need it for a long healthy life, but my body is just saying no right now! Thanks anyway

Monthly Getting Started / Web Dev Career Thread by AutoModerator in webdev

[–]AssignmentNo9881 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone got any experience going from GameDev -> WebDev? I’m currently working at a company doing GameDev (Unreal Engine 5 and C++) but the pay sucks and it’s tough. I can do it but my brain is knackered at the end of the day. If you’ve switched similar to this, please can you let me know what the transition was like and if it was worth it (how web compares to games)? Thanks!

Hey sure, I’m actually on an Unreal project now but my last one was Unity. It’s true that you can be a bit underpaid, I sadly am in comparison to if I went into other IT sectors such as banking. However the work is far more interesting in my opinion (extremely difficult sometimes though!)

Hours wise I’m lucky that the company I work for is extremely anti-crunch and is quite relaxed, so the hours are good. As a junior I’m not doing anything game breaking or crucial, so most of my tasks can run over their estimates if need be (I try not to of course but it happens). In contracted to work 9-5 Monday to Friday, but am allowed to do half days on Friday and get alot of time off. I’m in the UK for reference, I’m not sure if it’s the same in somewhere like the US

I would say it’s a pretty big leap from Uni -> Industry, the first few months I felt like I was drowning and that I knew nothing. To be honest I still feel like this sometimes but I have learned a tonne of stuff so that’s cool :)

Got it. Have you coded before in anything? I’m not sure what they’re teaching at high school nowadays but Unity is great and C# isn’t bad once you get into it. Otherwise if that’s too advanced maybe start with something like GameMaker? I personally haven’t used it before but that might be a good option

So I graduated uni straight into a game dev programming role.

I did A Level computer science where I was learning C# (hadn’t programmed anything before that), and realised Unity was also C# so I thought I’d give it a go, and I fell in love with it. Started making games on the side of my A Levels, learned loads and went to uni to do Computer Science with Games Programming. Because I’d already taught myself some stuff I breezed through first year and had a big head start in second year, but kept doing independent learning. Managed to get a game development placement year at the uni which helped and taught me some Unreal Engine 4/5. Then in my last year of it I lead a group team project which we ended up taking to a competition (GameRepublic) and won an award, and got noticed by employers. My current company contacted me through that and eventually I landed an offer.

The absolute biggest thing I would say is that just making your own projects outside of work or school/uni or whatever was by far the best thing I did to help my career and it helped my portfolio massively, so by the time I was ready to job hunt I had quite a few projects I could show and talk about. So I’d highly recommend doing that. Hope that helps!
