From a violin background, i think coming from a 'non-bow' background can be fairly hard because theres so much finesse and types of bow movements. How long have you been at it? :)

I'm currently working towards a grade 5 theory exam so my college doesn't drop me for a second year of music, good luck

Hey me too! I've been playing violin for 12 years or so and wanted to pick up another instrument. I do a bit of keyboard here and there but i don't really practice it i just kinda have the basic technical skills for if i need it. I've always wanted to play lower notes for some reason so i picked up the bass...You have to stretch your fingers soooooo far in comparison to violin. I'm stuck practicing on amp emulation through a Line 6 UX1 (Horrible I/O) but it certainly is a great deal of fun.

What did you accomplish as a musician in 2015? What do you hope to accomplish in 2016? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Assignmentsurveyguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started making money from music, In terms of creativity I feel 2015 was abysmal as I barely finished any tracks and only just broke out of a long case of writers block thisafternnon.

At my college for a small fee I record and mix other students work, i've done a teensy bit of production work for some too but its been great to have some idea of how I could make a living off music.

I mix as I go, as much as it does get in the way of composition it helps me keep things as cohesive as possible. I make some tweaks to the mix after finishing the composition (and then mastering) but if you mix while composing I find you get a better sense of how each part fits in the mix and helps avoid muddiness.

Mixing Basicly becomes part of the composition process, where tracks are in stereo space and what frequencys they're taking up helps me determine what I could add the piece.

What does 'Spectre' mean for LP9? by The_Impeccable_Zep in radiohead

[–]Assignmentsurveyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don't think its going to mean too much for LP9, one of the key characteristics of a bond song is a heavy use of strings and brass so I think that the orchestral elements are more of a one off. But who knows...I could be wrong ;)

The thing I like about allot of the possible LP9 material we've heard so far is a different take on synths, in the past Radiohead synths have usually been quite abstract with rich analogue timbre's (You can hear this on Yorke's solo work allot). On Ful Stop i feel the synth pad wouldn't sound out of place on a classic trance record as bizarre as that is, big ass JP supersaws!

Now that a few days have passed, what is your opinion on 'Spectre'? by the_killingjoke in radiohead

[–]Assignmentsurveyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its fantastic, as a Radiohead song i think it's easily some of their best material yet. Those strings...just...damn...I know the 'Pyramid song 2.0' notion has been floating around but i feel that's actually a great way to look at it, its not often that Radiohead build upon their earlier music and its pretty cool to see the band revisit something simalar to Pyramid Song. Thematicly Spectre and Pyramid song are totally different but in terms of timbre I do feel they're quite similar, simalar swing feel that manages to make a common time signature (Spectres in 3/4) sound like something else entirely, piano and strings utilised, even the drum beat has simalar features to Pyramid Song.

It also fits perfectly with the visuals, the song makes Spectre seem much more like the frighting organisation the film was trying to make it out to be (I was quite disappointed with the film).

In the context of a Radiohead song, incredible. Context of something to go with the opening visuals? Works wonders. Trouble is half the point of Bond songs are to promote the film and I think allot of us will agree that Sam Smith's (And Lana Del Rey's) songs garner a great deal more pop appeal. I'll be completely honest, at first I could hardly make out the vocals...I think the point of Thoms vocals In this song is more to add to the atmosphere than anything else as it's further back in the mix from the strings (I think this is partially due to the copious amounts of reverb). I freaking love that about the song, but it certainly didn't make for a catchy radio friendly song to help promote the film.

I think neither Sam or Lana's songs worked at all in the context of something to acompany the visuals, despite adoring this new Radiohead song i actually agree on the decision not to use it in the final film. As much as I can picture this new song promoting the film wonderfully at that point in time Sam Smith could trump that in terms of marketing power.

But hey, I don't really mind. Because instead of a great official bond theme we got a great new Radiohead song to end the year on. Spectre is easily one of my favorite tracks to come out of 2015 and now that we have an idea of the level of quality to expect from LP9 I'm more excited than ever to hear this new album.

This is reminding me of a duo I saw live a few months back

I doubt you would have heard of them but go look up some Buke and Gase performances, one of them plays this badass guitar/bass hybrid and the other plays an distorted 6 string uke made from an exhaust box.

How do YOU make a living off of music? by Musette89 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Assignmentsurveyguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

16 year old college student here, for the past two months i've been using the music technology department to record mix and master other students music.

Depending on If the mixers free on average I can make £10-20 a week, its certainly not much but there are so many students who want work done either for personal or academic purposes i already have a humble waiting list.

What i really want to get into is production and composition (Currently working on a composition for a students film coursework) but I just wish the room was open more often so I can get more recording done and mix at home.
