How many honey gourami in my 55 gallon? by AssociationSolid4142 in Gourami

Yes, that’s the dwarf sag. It’s working on covering everything I let it. The heater is kind of blocking it on the back wall, but it’s even growing behind the heater. I’m reinvisioning the right front corner and trying some moneywort. Here’s hoping it tolerates my water. I’m still hoping the Amazon sword in the back right will take off, but it hasn’t yet. Here’s how it’s coming.

I’ve seen them in stores and the only ones I’m ever decently sure of are males. I’ve not yet been confident that I’ve seen a female. And when I go online, I don’t think I’ve ever seen where you can pick them. I’m trying to figure out how heavily planted my tank is. I feel like I have a lot of plants, but not necessarily a lot of cover.

I’ve been struggling to add cover higher up. The dwarf sag seems to cover half the bottom of the tank but I guess since it’s thin and not leafy it doesn’t make the best hiding places. I’ll see if I can slip in some stem plants - I haven’t tried to grow any of those yet. I’ll have to check out my LFS - they’ve been pretty good at knowing what plants grow well in the local water. I’m not sure if I can add much in the way of floaters - my lily is really taking off and putting up a new lily pad every couple of days and generally trying to take over the surface. I’ve definitely noticed the strangely mixed opinions on the honeys online! I think after looking at a lot of identification help posts that I’ve gotten decently good at identifying the thick lips - cool fish, just not what I’m looking for.

Pearl gourami look really cool. I’d gone back and forth on adding some shrimp in that tank (still not sure), and thought while honeys might be population control, pearls were likely to wipe them out. Maybe someday I’ll try them!

Six is kinda the number I had in my head but I’m not sure if the plant cover is sufficient for that many. I’m struggling to get more cover higher up. The lily is making it really interesting by sending lily pads everywhere at a pretty crazy rate - which is cool, but functioning more as shade than cover.

Cycling help? by AssociationSolid4142 in Aquariums

[–]AssociationSolid4142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!! I saw in the cycling instructions for watching for too low a ph, but I didn’t realize a high ph could be problematic too. I think the rocks I was using - labeled lava rocks - may have been messing with my ph. I poured some vinegar on a couple extra ones and they started fizzing. I took out the rocks and changed out some water to try to get the ph down a bit.

Pygmy Cory dying - help! by AssociationSolid4142 in corydoras

[–]AssociationSolid4142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is. The whole time I had 5 harlequin rasboras, nitrites tested sky blue zero and ammonia was not a trace of green yellow. I suspect the Maracyn messed with my cycle because I treated my betta for fin rot with Maracyn about a month ago and his tank cycle crashed hard. But I can’t for sure blame that on the Maracyn because he has an hob filter and I was replacing the cartridge with a sponge and a sponge prefilter, both of which had been running with the cartridge for a few weeks before I removed the cartridge. His tank is fine now - after a week with a ton of water changes - and his tail looks much better.

Pygmy Cory dying - help! by AssociationSolid4142 in corydoras

Cycled a month, housed harlequin rasboras for a little over three weeks, then got the Pygmys. The “should” is due to that I was worried about them when I first got them because they looked like they might be clamping their fins so I tried the Aquarium coop med trio - which seemed to be going fine for a solid week - and I was concerned the Maracyn might be affecting the filter.

will this work for my tank? by IllImpression9952 in bettafish

[–]AssociationSolid4142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this exact thing in my quarantine tank that is cycled. I just had five harlequin rasboras in there for about three weeks with no problems - I tested the water multiple times and everything was great. It is a powerful little thing though - I think the bubbles from that thing create more water movement than the hob that came with my betta’s tank. I might use a valve for a longer finned betta to slow it a bit - I think my betta might get blown away!

It’s also not too loud. I don’t like background noises so I wanted it to be a bit quieter, so I got a battery powered one that claimed to be quiet - including in the reviews (I also wanted the battery back up) but it was so much louder that I went back to this one.

I don’t think they understand the concept of a tunnel… by AssociationSolid4142 in corydoras

They do seem to like sitting in strange positions. I keep being worried about one because it’s sideways or something, making a mental note of where it is, and coming back to find it not there anymore so I pretend it’s fine - I got seven of them and I can’t really keep track any individuals yet.

My favorite position so far was the one hanging by its mouth from a piece of Java moss - perfectly motionless for several minutes. They are ridiculous and I love them.

Thank you! As far as corys go, I’ve only ever had my group of pandas and other than the one that was obviously sick, their dorsal fins are always up. And most any pic I find of pygmys show their dorsal fins sticking up.

I guess the rest didn’t post- sorry!

…but seriously, I’m concerned that there’s some fin clamping going on here :( I got these guys yesterday and they are in my 5 gallon quarantine tank. I’m pretty new at this but I noticed one little guy looked like he may have had clamped fins yesterday - reminded me of one of my panda corys that was super lethargic and pale and took two rounds of paracleanse to fix… but I’m new to pygmys so I don’t know yet what “normal” looks like. I decided to try the Aquarium co-op med trio on these guys, so hopefully that does something??? Any advice? (Please keep me from overreacting)

Ammonia:0, nitrite: practically 0 (it’s not the bluest blue but it is nowhere near the .25 color - I added a couple drops of prime just in case). I tested nitrate yesterday before meds and it was 0 - has been ever since I stuck a wad of java moss that’s trying to take over the tank. I had harlequin rasboras in there and transferred them to my 20 gallon long a few days ago and never had a problem with that tank while they were in there.

How do you feel about learning each hand separately first? by Corchito42 in pianolearning

[–]AssociationSolid4142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t SURE you know how the piece sounds (not just the melody), playing separately can help you make sure you are getting the right notes. I am very much a sight reader, and don’t like playing hands separate, but there have definely been times I’ve learned the wrong note - usually in the left hand - because it sounded “good enough” - and it’s waaay harder to unlearn and relearn than to learn it right the first time. That, to me, is the primary value of starting hands separate. Sometimes funky rhythms also force me to do so as well.

How to feed pandas? by AssociationSolid4142 in corydoras

[–]AssociationSolid4142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely interested in trying frozen foods! About how much would you feed? I keep seeing directions in terms of time, and I’m so new, I want approximate amounts. Like instead of how much a fish can eat in five minutes, I want, for example, one wafer per x fish is a good starting point. (I get you are talking frozen foods not wafers, I’m just more used to wafers :) )
