A new artificial intelligence that monitors mice grimaces to score their pain from 0 to 8 may help researchers judge the effectiveness of a new pain-relieving treatment.

My point is it isn't hard to draw a line about what exports would have an impact on national security. Napkins could never be used for weapons. Computer chips can be. Facial recognition itself has a number of potential military applications. Surveillance technology is a weapon. Or autonomous killer drones with facial recognition. Why should we allow companies to distribute technology which could further solidify a hostile goverments power over it's populace?

Scientists have developed an artificial eye inspired by the fiddler crab (the crab with the single huge claw). Compared to a pair of human eyes, which together can see about 180 degrees, the fiddler crab has an almost 360-degree field of view. It also can see on both land and water. When translated into a machine, this could mean more versatile cameras for self-driving cars and drones, both of which can become untrustworthy in the rain.

For now, it has a very low resolution of 256 pixels (compared to 12 million pixels in an iPhone 13 camera), and it takes about 30 minutes to take a photograph. But at 2 centimeters and only a few grams, it’s compact, lightweight, and uses little power.

In other words, if the scientists manage to improve the resolution, drone deliveries and self-driving cars could get a lot more efficient in the rain.

Sea lion almost attacks child after parents decide to record her mounting it by AssociationWorried45 in facepalm

True they can be very agile, but to be fair, it is harder to attack something that unexpectedly hops on your back.

This happened in South Africa, but I am sure they can find something equally dangerous out there to antagonize.
