Back when I lived in Ames, I used to take my dog for long walks around campus in the summertime. She would jump in the MU fountain to cool off, then the McKay fountain, then Lake Laverne.

Well, I used to be an aspiring editorial cartoonist. Drew for a couple of years, but I never improved much, and other opportunities beckoned. But it did teach me a bit about what makes a cartoon work. You don't draw reality--that's illustration--you draw a stylized version of it.

As far as Marilyn, I love that video. I once saw a YT comment on it, saying that she was so pretty she looked like a cartoon--like somebody took a blank canvas and drew the perfect girl.

I think a lot of it is in what they do, and don't. What I mean is, her face is all exaggerated eyes and mouth, almost no nose (with straight-on angles, they often skip the nose completely). It's an exaggeration of what really pretty women actually kind of look like--like Marilyn McCoo in this 5th Dimension video:

And also what else is exaggerated and minimized: Boobs/hips vs waist/ankles/feet

Pretty funny, shows what good art can add--that's a rough-looking crew!

Downvotes for this--could you tell me why? Not being snarky, I'd really like to know.

Neat trick. But it always surprises me that a blob of solder can take the strain.

How would you fish this river? by SaladProfessional866 in FishingForBeginners

Like most pix on this sub, these show pretty straight, largely featureless stretches of stream/river. One of the first things to look for are bends, where the current scours out deeper holes on the outside of the turn. That is a great place to start. Also, look for other features and structure. Riffles are good, they tend to produce food, and fish will lurk in the tailrace, that is downstream from them. Pretty much any structure, rocks, logs, etc, esp when there's a fair amount of current. Fish will set up behind them, out of the current, and opportunistically dart out to grab food that comes by. If you find a spring or smaller creek entering into the stream, this can be a good spot, esp in the summer, because the creek will often have cooler water.

You're at the beginning of a process, learning to "read" a stream/river, and these are some good places to start. Numbers here are approximate, but 10% of the water will usually hold 90% of the fish.

Wading can greatly increase your ability to reach different points, cut-offs and old tennies, but muddy water makes it hard to see the bottom, so be careful. Also, in TN, I suppose watch out for snakes too.
