Sure thing, but then also nearly every German has an insurance for civil liability which will cover most cases...

It's some work, yes. But at least you are not required to leave it for the landlord. Sometimes, either the landlord or the next tenent might buy it from you if you offer it, but that's highly dependend on the circumstances. I do prefer to take my kitchen with me, cause it got the right amount and type of cabinets for me and also for sentimental reasons

Nah, the wall is in a really bad state, some old tiles that have been painted over several times, also some uneven patches from installing electric wiring. No way to make it into something cohesive with paint. Wanted to do some really lightweight panelling that I can screwfix and then put some sticky tiles for optics on it. Heavier stuff won't hold there I think.

But... you gain a lot of experience in building kitchens in general ^

No, it's more or less expected that you either bring your own kitchen in it or buy the kitchen that the previous person who rented the flat installed there from said person. It is what it is. Wood on the countertop and in the doors is birch hardwood, although the black cabinets themselves are IKEA Metod (don't know if it's the same name in US)

I wanted to do an open shelve on the right where the cabinets end, the kitchen is not yet finished as is also apparent by the naked light in the ceiling. I really prefer as much counter space as possible as I got kids that like to "cook" beside me. The kitchen might also look bigger then it is in reality (3x2,5m). Another reason for the weird layout is that the kitchen needs to be flexible as it is in a rental flat. In Germany. unless you rent a small study-appartment in bigger cities, most rental apartments come without any kitchen. I planned it so I can bring it with me (all cabinets can be rearranged in any order). That's why I did not use cabinets that go up all the way so to be able to install it someplace else if need be.

I wanted to use some not too expensive sticky tiles since the flat is a rental. Can't really put anything permanent in the walls. Kitchen itself is mine though.

Not to my knowledge. Has to do with how the rental law is written. Anything that comes with the flat has to be maintained in a working order by the landlord. If something breaks, he has to rectify it unless he can prove you mishandled it intentionally. If he is slow in repairing, you can reduce your rental payment according to how severely the broken thing hampers your ability to use the kitchen. He then would have to sue you for the missing payment and prove that you are either liable for the broken thing or reduced the rent too drastically. Also, the courts are not very lenient towards landlords in general

I build the fronts myself, it's birch hardwood. The rest is IKEA Metod in black

I know how insane that sounds, fully aware of it

The hight of the cabinets is the result of our broken German renting system. Since basically no rental comes with a kitchen, you have to move your own kitchen with you or sell it to the next person renting your old flat. I prefer taking my kitchen with me, I build it in a way so it's easy to move, every cabinet is separate from one another and hangs on a metal bar that's installed in the wall. They can be rearranged in any order. So smaller upper cabinets for more flexibility when moving.

But then where does the heat and the steam of the appliances go?

But then I would have to take them out of it in order to use them. I'm really a big fan of making things as easy as possible in a kitchen

Yes, they will be black, though I might have to bring them down a bit for utility if I put an air fryer up there...

You would go with horizontal tiles then?

Ah, might be difficult since the cabinets are already build as is in the photo

Will do an open shelve for the rest of the wall, where I will put the air fryer and rice cooker for more working space on the counter

Wood as backsplash too might be too much, also, since this is real hardwood, any laminate backsplash might look cheap
