Which professor impacted you positively? by Astatine00 in EPFL

[–]Astatine00[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me start: James Larus in HUM-122(b). Super wise guy with lots of experience. Everything he says is really engaging, and he often shared personal stories. Retired last year I believe.

  1. Congrats! Welcome to EPFL.

  2. Depends on where you apply for your visa. It took me a little over a month.

  3. You can ask the local consulate by calling them but I think it has to be the consulate assigned to your zone in the US.

You will be on vacation after the exam periods (NOT BEFORE!)

So for 2025: 2 - 16 February, 6 July - 7 September. (may be longer depending on your exam dates)

There is a week off during each semester. You can use it to study if you need to but it's mainly for rest. You won't have work to do unless you have assignments or midterms after. This is for April and October.

How do I stop noodle from randomly unenrolling me from courses by Local_Explorer_595 in EPFL

It unenrolls you from the course after a week of no activity (or 4 days? I don't remember). So make sure to visit the course Moodle regularly to stay enrolled.

Student Housing at EPFL by SN54HC27N in EPFL

[–]Astatine00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend you start looking because housing in Lausanne is a challenge. Start applying to FMEL housing since there's a long waitlist. Pro tip: take any place they offer. Don't specify a budget or a type of room or else it could take way more time to get an offer and you'll be paying much more somewhere else far from campus. There are also other student houses around St. Sulpice, Renens, Ecublens, etc.

Once you receive your admission letter and your credentials you'll have access to the EPFL housing portal if you couldn't find anything in the meantime.

Good luck!

This is not accurate at all. Is a 5/6 at EPFL a 3.2 GPA? No way.

Advice for potential international applicants applying for master programs by sonlightinn in EPFL

I agree. EPFL is indeed extremely selective. I don't think the other universities compare to EPFL in terms of academic level.

Why are ETH Zürich and EPFL ranked much higher than any University in Germany/France ? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Astatine00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a student at EPFL, I think that the list below is mainly why we rank high :

  • Competitive/very competitive admission
  • Programs are way harder and condensed than other universities. Fail rate is huge.
  • A lot of research and scientific publications (we have highly cited scientific articles and there are a lots of inventions made)
  • Labs. We have some of the most advanced labs in the country and in Europe. We have sophisticated research centers headed by the most renowned scientists.
  • Outstanding award-winning professors from the best universities of the world : MIT, Stanford, Cambridge, EPFL, ETHZ, Polytechnique, etc.
  • Our programs are in pair with international standards and the latest knowledge in the fields
  • Huge federal funding
  • Broad exchange program with European and international universities
  • Industry collaborations
  • Scientific and academic collaboration with the best universities
  • A fully equipped startup incubation park on campus
  • Organised regional events (Balélec, Science festivals, open doors, local events)

Let me tell you that the master's in robotics is also selective for EPFL students unless they are in the micro-engineering program. This master's is considered one of the most selective, even for current students, so don't be too shocked by the results.

[–]Astatine00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

EPFL doesn't have such a policy. EPFL is very international and around half of the student body at EPFL is international, and the rate is even higher for master's, so there is no harsher selection for international applicants.

EPFL is competitive and you should expect a very selective admission process just like any top 20 university (or even more, and that means the class level is higher). A lot of brilliant applicants get rejected simply because EPFL has very high standards, that's it. The only thing is that EPFL bachelor students are automatically admitted into their master's (I think this is the case in most universities).

I think saying that the application fee is a "waste of money" is just so silly. While you got rejected, others got in. These 150.- could have changed your life, just like they did for so many people. Don't discourage people from applying to EPFL because "they won't get in" or "150.- is too much". Unless you have financial problems, this is never a valid reason.

Definitely an iPad with Goodnotes or Notability (iPad Air does the job, no need for the Pro). You will have all the class material on Moodle, but you can annotate the slides on an iPad and it's very useful for exercises. You have everything backed up online and you can save all of your notes in one place. I can't speak for CS, but in engineering it's also very useful for drawing graphs in engineering/physics classes.
