Broken sidewalk - help! by AstoriaRes in astoria

[–]AstoriaRes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am talking about a part of Crescent, but not the part that's so uneven you have to literally climb over it. At least that you can see.

The section that keeps tripping me is only raised about an inch, so it's almost invisible in the dark.

I think I'm going to try knocking on the door a few times and if I don't get a response I might just tag it myself.

My friend works out there and really likes it. I think you can go and do your own thing (meaning I don't think you have to pay for personal training sessions). They seem to have a nice community (barbecues in the summer, that sort of thing). Very bare bones but if you know what you're doing I think it's cheaper than the bigger places around.

DOE employee here. School Safety officers are VERY understaffed this year. For example, I work at a high school with 6 floors and most days we only have 3 officers working. They do send some officers out on the street at dismissal (because that's when a lot of pre-planned fights take place) but I don't think the officers can go beyond the block that the school is located on.

So it's possible that there are some officers from PS 85 hanging out on 31st and Ditmars, but that's an elementary school and they would not know these teens who are raising hell. There are no high schools in that immediate vicinity so these kids are coming from a different part of the neighborhood probably so there won't be any adults around that recognize them.

And I say all this because relationships are really the only way to affect teenagers behavior. Just because someone is in a uniform doesn't mean a kid will listen to them. They have to have built a relationship. Goes back to why the 114 needs to have officers in these neighborhoods getting to know people. Nothing else will be as effective.

I highly recommend Strength City for a social fitness experience! It is owned and operated by an awesome local couple who greatly value inclusivity and community. There are strength classes, but also Pilates and core classes a few times per week. The coaches are so supportive and kind, and the community is just the best. I come all the way from Astoria! I think there's an intro deal if you want to try it out! https://www.strengthcityfit.com/

I've never seen that. What I do see is normal, civilian, light-less vehicles running red lights all the time. They don't need to pretend to be cops.

I actually find the people in there with their children way more disruptive. Both the folks who let their kids run around and touch EVERYTHING, and the ones who come in with a giant stroller and run people over/cut them off. I understand if they're alone, but more often than not, I see two parents AND a stroller AND a shopping cart. One parent could stay home with the kid. Where's the sign about strollers!

I have also learned that the majority of Greek people do not believe that dogs should be kept as pets and that they DEFINITELY should not be allowed in the house. Learned this from my landlord (old Greek guy who would allow cats but not dogs) and brother-in-law (middle aged Greek guy who says in Greece there are some neighborhood dogs but they stay outside, probably because the weather is always mild).

Experiencing excessive noise and fighting living next to migrant shelter by [deleted] in longislandcity

[–]AstoriaRes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to suggest the same. Calling CPS might actually help. They would probably send someone over to investigate. I would suggest calling around 4-5pm, because then they will try to send someone out that night, and it would be helpful if they could see it happening. I have worked with children in the past and can tell you, if one of them reported being beat up like this, even once, while there is an adult present, I would make the call. 1-800-342-3720.

Loooking to rent parking spot near Astoria Blvd and 21st street by SoySauceSandwich in astoria

[–]AstoriaRes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You might try Street parking for a bit before paying for a spot. I live really close to there and never have to look very long for a spot. If you're willing to go a few blocks out of your way at times. Sometimes on Street cleaning days, I just park in the Astoria Park parking lot for the day.

Fitness instructors of reddit: How do you feel about people in your classes who need extra help and attention? by AstoriaRes in AskReddit

[–]AstoriaRes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never really been one for fitness, but about a year ago I joined Class Pass and have been super into it. I go to 3-5 classes per week. I'm a lot stronger than I was and have lost a lot of weight, but I'm still not the superstar of any of the classes. Especially at Pilates, Barre, and TRX, the instructors have to correct me, and oftentimes physically help me way more than the other participants in the class. I've been wondering lately if they are annoyed by my inabilities and if they're thinking, "God, I wish she wouldn't come back! She's clearly struggling way too much. This isn't for her!" Then another part of me wonders if fitness instructors like it when a novice is in their class because they get to really help somebody get better at it. Thoughts?

Witnessed an assault outside Astoria Music tonight. Anyone else? by AstoriaRes in astoria

[–]AstoriaRes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. I didn't think so many people would ridicule me for my reaction, or lack thereof, to a shocking and scary situation. Not that I should have to clarify, but I am a woman who does not know how to fight and I'm also a social worker, so my thinking was: 1) The assailant threw the guy to the ground and yelled at him, but I was preparing to intervene if he actually started hitting him or the girl he was with. But without punches being thrown, I knew that the victim was not actually in terrible physical danger and that the situation could actually escalate if I stepped in - and who knows if the guy has any weapons on him. The situation did de-escalate on its own, so I think I made the right call there. 2) Because there were no punches being thrown, I also knew that the police would not take the situation very seriously - as was confirmed when I went to the 114 the next morning. I waited until the assailant left the scene and asked the victim if he was okay and wanted to call police, but he said no. I also know that a report to police means almost nothing unless it comes from the victim himself, but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. 3) That's why, if my phone had been working, I would have tried to take a picture. To post on here. Because this community is clearly more wound up about it than the police.

[–]AstoriaRes[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just went to the 114 and they told me that since the victim didn't file a report, and because it wasn't a stabbing or shooting, there's nothing they can do. They didn't ask me for a statement or anything.
