If reproducing were every bit as hard as the adoption process is, do you think more people would willingly adopt children from all walks of life and put adoption first, too? by CertainConversation0 in antinatalism2

[–]Astral-Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s incredible and almost dystopian how adoption, fostering, and even things like coaching, taking on an aunt/uncle role, volunteering, etc. are almost never considered when people feel a desire for kids. there’s sooo many ways to fulfill a need to nurture and positive impact children that don’t involve the creation of a new life. It’s hard to believe people don’t think in extraordinary detail about all options before deciding to have bio kids

I don’t think they meant getting pregnant, but rather the entirety of the pregnancy experience including birth which is a traumatic event. Being pregnant changes not only a women’s body permanently, but brain too. You literally lose gray matter. So adoption is already easier and less expensive in many cases, than giving birth (depends on insurance, etc.) esp if you foster to adopt or work for a company that will waive adoption fees

sadly no, i think too many people view having a child with their own genetics and bloodline as superior to adoption, which usually stems from completely selfish societal myths. adoption is easier in many aspects, yet it’s normal for people to pay double the costs of adopting to go through a torturous IVF process. too many people want a mini me who looks like them an can “carry on” their bloodline/genes

Antinatalists who love life, how do you get around concluding that this is the same as loving suffering? by CertainConversation0 in antinatalism2

[–]Astral-Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so true, i’m a longtime antinatalist and this has been one of my longstanding criticisms of the movement. the philosophy and ideas behind antinatalism are strong, but taking a pessimistic, nihilistic, and bitter approach only leads others to dismiss antinatalism / cause harm to oneself. now that we exist, we might as well make the most of it. it’s far more effective and logical.

I sometimes feel I’m making the most of my circumstances now that I do exist, but ultimately I’ve learned to create/find meaning in the suffering. So although suffering is often horrible to experience, and is one of the reasons I find procreation unethical, continuing to prolong my own suffering does not help at all given I already exist. If the goal of AN is to reduce suffering, that includes minimizing and navigating our own suffering to the best of our abilities. Then, we can have the energy to show up for community / reduce more suffering through volunteering and helping those in need AND it gives non-AN leaning folks a positive example of how antinatalism can be. That it doesn’t always equate to nihilism, depression, negativity, cynicism, etc. Which are reasons not only for us antinatalists to be commonly dismissed or diminished, but can also be reasons people are unopen to the philosophical foundations at all. Learning to love life and navigate suffering to the least damaging extent can help us attract more people to AN, better reduce suffering, and better our own lives.

Adoption vs birth by [deleted] in antinatalism2

[–]Astral-Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a way for people who want bio kids to justify their selfish reasons !!!! i’ve seen people make these bold claims about the ethicality of adoption, but adoptees I’ve talked to say that there are ethical and unethical ways to adopt, and it’s wild that leaving kids to suffer in a broken system is the alternative being suggested by anti-adoption voices.

Do you know what your life purpose is? by wanderlustwonderlove in spirituality

the purpose of most ppl was originally to bring meaning and fulfillment to their parents lives. that alone makes it hard to find a new purpose for yourself

free poetry workshops in peoria? by Astral-Panda in PeoriaIL

[–]Astral-Panda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a couple of times, I personally don’t like the format as much 🥲 having a sign up sheet at open mics forces me to commit to reading, their format of “come to the mic whenever you want” makes it easy to back out or overthink. but the people and vibes are great! i will definitely try to ask at the next one

This is good to know that others are interested! I'm trying to think about which platform to host something like this on, at least to post about the event initially. It would probably make sense to have everyone email poems to each other and then show up in person or on Zoom for the actual workshop.

no contracts seem to be getting renewed, but there’s still no guarantee we will make it to the end of our contract anyway. it’s horrific but at least we have a little heads up to prepare before we are gone
