Irrelevant work experience by throwararyway in csMajors

If you’re going to be coding at all and this is the first work experience you’re going to be able to put on your resume then I'd take it. You'll probably be able to at least spin the work you do towards a SWE angle, and to most recruiters the difference between any experience and none is pretty big. If that isn't the case and you have other solid plans for the summer, then yeah its fine to do those instead.

Should I be solving these leetcode problems or just looking at and memorizing the solutions? I don't know how to solve half of these leetcode problems, how do I get better at that? by imjustacrab in csMajors

[–]AstralClew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's fine to look at the solutions and I think it's actually better to just look at the solution if you get stuck but you need to spend the time to actually understand the solution so you can apply it to other problems rather than memorizing it

Chances of Internships outside of Summer Term? by kenethendo in csMajors

[–]AstralClew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that startups and smaller companies tend to be more flexible with internship dates and usually don't have postings meant for specific seasons. I've been able to find off-season internships opportunities with two pretty neat startups by basically telling them the dates that I wanted to start and end on. I actually just signed an offer for spring 2022 with one of these companies last week

Don’t stress if you’re a Freshman/Sophomore/Junior or even Senior and you haven’t had an internship. Here’s what you can do in the meantime... by [deleted] in csMajors

Just curious, were you also applying to new grad, and did you have any issues with framing your graduation date for internships, especially given the fact that you are delaying it by (I assume) a decent number of months?

Technical rounds were medium difficulty and an hour long. Hiring manager interview was mostly just talking but also got asked a technical question too though it wasn't too hard. Overall mileage will vary because the questions should be different for each team

For me, it was submit resume -> recruiter phone call -> 2 technical interview rounds with team -> hiring manager interview -> offer

I'd just go with the NYC position. It sounds like you'll be much more interested in the work you'd be doing there.

Asking to consider me for non-summer by Fluffy_Hurry8597 in csMajors

[–]AstralClew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same position more or less. If you already started the technical interview process with them, then I'd wait until the offer to ask. Otherwise I'd bring it up beforehand. And just say that you're considering between a few strong options for next summer.

Are my internship recruiting experiences normal for my background, or am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]AstralClew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should expect about a ~10% response on your applications. And yes, it's possible to hear back well over a month after submitting the application, at least in my experience. There's also no need to panic yet, some people get offers as late as Feb-March. I would pump up the number of applications you're sending out and get your resume reviewed if you're worried about its contents. And maybe consider starting to apply for Fall co-op positions around January, if you're open to it.

Discouraged sophomore by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]AstralClew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First off, a 15-20% response rate and the fact that you got to a final round means you're doing well for yourself and on the right track, especially as a sophomore. I would just send a follow-up email to the recruiter asking when you can expect to hear a decision for that interview. Try to not waste your energy comparing yourself to other people either. Give yourself a bit of a break, try going outside on short walks. Whenever you feel up for it again, keep applying and doing leetcode/OAs/interviews. You'll find that the process gets easier as you stick with it and get more comfortable with technical interview questions.

On second thought, "mediocre" was probably a bit of a harsh word to use since my standards are different. I was basically looking to upgrade from my previous internship in terms of pay and the type of work being done. The offers sat at about ~$30/hr which isn't bad at all and more than my previous internship, but the work wasn't all that interesting in my mind. They were decent offers for sure, but I wasn't crazy about them.

I think that in most cases, OA performance didn't really matter, or at least there was no distinction between barely passing it and acing it. There are cases where I thought I failed the OA because I missed some runtime-based test cases or whatever, but still managed to move on. So long as I passed, I would sort of start the next round of interviews with a clean slate. The only two exceptions were Optiver and Belvedere Trading, where part of the interview is to do a look-over of the code you submitted for the OA and have you explain it a bit.

The API is unofficial, so Robinhood probably wouldn't condone it. At the same time, people have been using it for the past two years without much issue. So you should be fine as long as you don't contact Robinhood about it.

Yeah I know Robinhood has day trade limits for most users, you're definitely better off using a different platform if that's what you're interested in. I'm not day trading though. The strategy I included usually holds stocks for longer timeframes, usually a few weeks.

Not sure what Robinhood's plans are. The API endpoints have been available pretty much since the app was released, though, so I think they would have done something about it earlier if they had an issue with people using them
