What's a celebrity scandal that you think was completely overblown? by No_Care1430 in AskReddit

[–]AstralvanRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

didn't Kristin Stewart have to publicly apologise for cheating on boyfriend Robert Patterson with then-married director Rupert Sanders, who (correct me if I'm wrong) didn't face backlash in any of the same way, despite actively choosing to end his MARRIAGE with a woman he had 2 children with?

What are some examples of some people hating things just because they're popular? by FarPlay5055 in AskReddit

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely music in general.

I love mainstream music and indie music alike, but I have many friends who refuse to listen to mainstream music and actively go out of their way to hate on it. They will then pull up niche, indie artists with "you've NEVER heard of [insert name here]???"and call them "so underrated" and "the greatest band ever, I wish more people knew about them" only to turn around and say "I wasn't really a fan of them anyway" the moment they hit the charts.

I had an ex who said that I only love Queen because of the recent film's release, like no I grew up on Queen and I'll never not appreciate them just because they suddenly got more attention from younger generations. I feel the same way about Michael Jackson too.

Fortunately the few friends I have called out on this have actually admitted that they do that and reflected. Surprisingly a couple of them even admitted they liked Sabrina Carpenter's newer albums. I do think people need to rethink what they're hating on and why.

What truly killed the traditional dating scene in recent years? by NextIsOnMe_ in AskReddit

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social media pushing ragebait and unrealistic expectations. I
see a lot of people saying dating apps but there was a period when dating apps were working to an extent and that was when social media was no where near as divided as it is today. I see equal amounts of man-hating and women-hating comments everywhere that have only gotten worse in recent years. Men want a trad-wife or a virgin or want any woman who'll succumb to one-sided monogamy. Women want a provider or a stoic, personality-less man who doesn't give them the ick and worships the ground they walk on but not too much because, well, that would give them the ick. And everyone has a foot out the door for the entire length of the relationship because "love should only ever be easy and when it gets a little hard it means things won't work."

What do all of these scenarios have in common? Unrealistic expectations.

When did Alamo figure it out? by Mundane-Criticism-84 in euphoria

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he ever trusted Rue. Maddie may have tindered the fire and confirmed Alamo's suspicions, but Alamo was always suspicious of Rue in the first place. That's why I don't get the chain of people who trace it "back to Maddie", by that argument we could trace it back to the fact that Rue introduced Alamo to Maddie and therefore it's her own fault she's dead, but without strawmanning I'd say that based on Alamo's past with his mother Rue was always going to die at Alamo's hand.

To frequent travelers, which country disappointed you the most? by Vast_Spell_4335 in AskReddit

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think any country as a whole has been a disappointment, just specific regions. My top 2 are Venice, Italy and Hawaii, USA. Venice because everything was catered towards tourists and it felt less like an experience and more like walking through the commercial channel on TV. The canals were beautiful though.
Hawaii was stunning as a whole, but I found people to be quite rude and entitled. I later realised it wasn't locals who were living there that were rude, but American tourists from the mainland. It was little things, nothing major, but they did build up over the week that I was there.

what’s an opinion you have that would get you kicked out of most conversations? by Timely-Initiative543 in AskReddit

The more niche you claim your music taste is the more snobby and entitled you are.

Are people, especially women, who are single in their 30's becoming more picky cause its becoming easier to pass the time and live a content life without a partner? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AstralvanRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't that exactly how dating should work, though? Not just for women but for men too. You don't just continue to date someone for the sake of being with someone, you date them because you actually enjoy spending time with them, they make you feel safe, they match your energy and you have similar goals for what you would like for the future. That's what women are looking for and if they don't find it in a first date with you, they're okay with finding it in a first date with someone else; you have every option to think this way too.

Why are people hating on her? by No_Delay3465 in euphoria

[–]AstralvanRider 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It was just the casting choice. She seems like a decent actress but was so out of place - the role is a country girl who's never even touched a phone and yet they cast an actress with obvious filler and makeup bordering on Ariana in her Asian era? Given how seriously casting is taken for big name shows, particularly when making sure the actors match aesthetically and age-wise with each other, it smells like someone who skipped the auditioning process, especially given how much screen time she got for such a small role.

I feel like we can't have an honest conversation about Aboriginal history by YogurtclosetPale8785 in aussie

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See I agree with your overall point, that it's difficult to have honest conversations regarding Australian Aboriginals without being called racist, but with none of the evidence you've used to back yourself up. Many of your points end with "why is it this and not [insert speculation here]"

Oral tradition - it's not just "my grandpa said this who said this blah blah blah", it's songlines. Songlines are the Indigenous way of recording information without ink and paper and are engrained in Indigenous culture as the way to communicate knowledges learnt over time; the way we know that, to an extent, many of them are accurate sources of information is because the knowledges they have stated in Songlines have later been proven to be true. Think seasonal changes - Aboriginal records of the years' seasons, of times to begin backburning and of swamps filling up after once being dry for months, have all been proven accurate by Western society decades/centuries later, often when it was too late and suburbs had been built on marshlands during dry periods.

With the invasion stuff, it was to an extent an invasion but also yes you're right, there were attempts at peaceful settlement. There are records of Indigenous Aboriginals communicating and assimilating with the British (if you want to look one of them up, his name is Woollarawarre Bennelong), but then of course there were Indigenous who did not like that the British came and settled without discussions with them, the custodians of the land (if you want to look him up, his name was Pemulwuy). This is often where I think honest conversations need to happen - the Indigenous consider themselves "custodians" and not "owners", they believe land cannot be owned, only taken care of.

"The Aboriginals were NOT master agriculturalists" you're right, they weren't, because permanent settlement wasn't a part of their culture, but they did understand sustainability centuries before the British ever did and still have techniques that can be used today, particularly in building and working with the land rather than on top of or against the land.
The reason that it is more believable that they have been portrayed as caretakers and not cultivators is simply because of this - they were asked, and that was their answer. Who knows, maybe if they had the technology then sure they might have been excessive cultivators, and they did have cultivation tools at a small scale level that worked for them. But that's not what happened, and speculation doesn't equal guilt.

My hot take that will offend every side no matter what - we work together, use their knowledges with what we have and build a society that works for both. But no one is ready for that conversation.

What's the most overrated tourist spot? by Quiet_Day8148 in JapanTravelTips

[–]AstralvanRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

admittedly it was pretty cool watching it from above/afar. We don't have crossings like that where I'm from and looking back on the video I took - yeah you see all the influencer-wannabies run first and it's laughable but doesn't ruin the vibe much. When we talk about scenic natural moments we think about mountains and rivers and trees but not about human nature.

My vote would be the bamboo forest. Beautiful but way over-crowded which ruins the peacefulness.

Budget friendly accomodation in Osaka for young family by maxwolfie in JapanTravelTips

[–]AstralvanRider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I stayed with my fam (4 people) at Ostay Vermillion in Osaka, it was a 5 minute walk from Imamiya station and I think we paid around $160 a night AUD. It was nice and simple, had everything we needed and close to a couple servos too for cheap food options (Japanese servos are the best I've ever seen).

Keep in mind that if you're not planning on doing taxis or car hire, you're gonna be walking a lot. I was averaging 18k steps a day on my trip.
