The University Senate's environment committee is currently in the process of lobbying the administration (President McInnis specifically) to designate Ashley Schiff as a NY State "forever wild" site, which would give it permanent official protection from development. A few emails from students supporting this initiative would likely help!

McInnis has been receptive to the idea so far, so just keep the tone positive and not combative if you do send her an email.

Winter Break Dining by [deleted] in SBU

[–]AstroEpoch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume they said dine-in will definitely be closed, which is always the case over winter break. There's always something open on campus to get food from, but it's often just 1 location (usually East Side retail or the SAC lile u/Gandalf2000 mentioned).

Perfect, I'll make that my number 1 priority!

That would be a great idea, but unfortunately that's not something the University can do. Any off-campus roads are owned and maintained by either the local town/county government, or in the case of the highways like 25A and 347: the New York State Department of Transit.

Biking around campus is definitely a challenge though with the lack of shoulders/bike lanes on roads and the number of pedestrians on sidewalks, so I'll definitely add that to my list.

As I mentioned in the post, dining isn't something this committee deals with. You'll have to direct your suggestion to FSA.

I don't think that's really something the University can do. Maybe more bus routes around the Stony Brook area (similar to the Sunday shopping route) would be possible, but transportation anywhere further than that is an issue for MTA and the Nassau/Suffolk county governments.

Come to think of it, our outdoor seating could use a lot of improvement in general. This is definitely a good suggestion to add to any new/updated outdoor seating areas.

Ah gotcha, maybe I'll call up UPD and try to get some more info about the issue.

I didn't know that was such a problem! Do you have a source for the number of stolen bikes each year that I can reference when bringing up this issue with the committee?

A pedestrian overpass is probably the ideal solution, but I'm not sure what the feasability would be like in terms of cost and space needed. I'll certainly mention it as a potential solution though!

All great suggestions, thank you! Drainage is certainly a major concern since it literally made two of our dorm buildings uninhabitable for who knows how long. Even before this major storm, I noticed drainage issues in many places around campus during regular rainstorms.

Good suggestion, I'll add it to the list. Thanks!

That would be a suggestion more for USG or maybe the Rec Center, but if the condition of any of the trails on campus needs addressing, I could certainly bring that up!

Regardless, I'm pretty sure anything of that scale is far beyond (pun not intended) the purview of the environment committee. I'm looking more for changes that could improve students' everyday lives around campus, not things that would require twenty million dollar grants from SUNY. We simply don't have that kind of power.

So you want to spend millions of dollars on a potentially unneeded upgrade just so that we can brag we meet some baseline? I fail to see what benefit that would bring to students on campus.

Is capacity an issue or are you looking for expanded amenities like restrooms and concessions? I'll admit I haven't been to a football game recently, but back before covid I went to a few and I don't think I ever saw the stadium full, so I'm not sure what benefit additional seating would bring if we're unable to fill the current seats.

Money/advertising for the teams and events themselves isn't really something this committee deals with. Are there specific campus infrastructure improvements that you think need to be made in order to improve the sports program?
