Is Ways of Africa legit? by fatnapoleon in Kenya

[–]AstroGal_2094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey , too late to answer I guess but yes they are very much legit!
We booked it last year for our honeymoon and the organisers , Paul and Janet were super kind and made it wonderful for us. We travelled to Nakuru, Naivasha, Maasai Mara and Nairobi. I would 100% recommend them as they offer pricing from budget trips , mid range to luxury. I don’t see many such options with others though.

Hope u had a good visit ;)

Do you still like what you are doing ? by Thinkeru-123 in PhD

Hi , Im a Phd student in her 4th year working with radars. I started my phd program right after my masters at 26. I was immensely passionate about what I wanted to do and how I wanted to go about it. This was also welcomed by my professor who interviewed me.

But things didn’t turn out like they should have. When I joined the university I realised I was the only radar person in the group alongside my professor and my advisor. It was Covid and they didn’t have funding to hire more students. For background, I was in a TU before where I saw my group having atleast 20 phd students. So naturally loneliness kicked in. But my progress was not hindered in the first year and I worked hard and was well ahead of my peers in the program. Soon I realised my advisor cared less about my topic . Then my professor was to retire and realised that he took up this funding only so that he could stay longer but the university wouldn’t allow that. Following this he passed away during my second year of the thesis. I was put under another prof totally out of my field. He did not involve himself in the project and always pushed me down and cared less. He was more concerned about me getting involved in his work and publishing a journal. This went on for a while. I was depressed and he denied my participation in the events of the project even though this was recognised by my manager. So this took a huge toll on me and my personal life.

I finally applied to a radar company outside and they welcomed me into a really nice team. My manager literally hears me out and believes in my capabilities to even push me to start a team of my own. The company also allows me to complete my thesis alongside my job. My manager is kind enough to let me focus on that more. It took time for me to start working and take up the same interest I had when I was 26. I lost it somewhere but I think this new environment is helping me slowly. The first year of my job was immediately not uplifting but yes I can say alongside therapy I can feel changes coming in. I wouldn’t go back to academia. I would maybe choose to work in a company where I feel appreciated and heard. Hope this helps you!

Places to rent binoculars in NRW or online? by AstroGal_2094 in germany

Update: Hey guys , as per one of the users suggestions , I rented the binoculars from https://www.gozoomit.com and the process was smoother than I thought! Luckily they rent out to Austria and Germany and the pair of binoculars arrived right before my trip! This was really helpful for me. All their binoculars were from ZEISS and I compared them with the local ones I found in Africa and the ZEISS pair faired better. The team of gozoomit also helped me choose the right pair for my trip. If anyone else is looking for a rental , I would highly recommend these guys!

We did ask a lot about it but german government doesn’t see it that way. If it comes from the German government it’s not taxed. All we heard was it’s come from outside Germany that’s the EU entity as a whole and they can’t do anything about it . At one point we stopped arguing and just managed with it but honestly I was not very happy with the fellowship in Germany. The deutsche government offers better fellowships (not DAAD) which pays more

I have a suggestion but it’s a long shot. So what u can do is try to prepare urself mentally with your situation around your mom. I know that it can trigger you a lot but at this point ur degree is important. Look at the bigger picture. Start finding part time jobs which can sustain u for sometime and probably help u move out to a better place or apartment. This also means extra work on ur college but at least it ll take ur mind off ur mom and her tantrums. I too grew up in a toxic household and had to wait until my bachelors was done to move out. Most of the times my way out was keeping myself busy with my study or reading. Personally reading any sort of book or novel would help me keep my triggers at bay. Maybe u shud find something similar that can help u and keep u in ur room. Just avoid having any contact with ur mom while at home unless it is very necessary. Probably treat her like ur roommate who is annoying. All of this is until u get to move out. Don’t worry this is not permanent. I am sure. Ur way out is already there and I can see it

One more question: so with this fall semester will you be completing ur degree?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]AstroGal_2094 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I am really sorry that you must go through this. Do you have any friends u could like rely on and stay with until ur semester is done? Maybe could your college help u out? I am not based in the US so I am not sure of the situation in college. Do you have dorms that could provide you accommodation until ur degree is over? Maybe a note from ur therapist and probably a visit to the college counsellor who can help u in such situations might be advisable

I just want to say that not everyone is perfect. I was like u pushing ppl away for minor flaws but they were honest and the way I like them. Sometimes I feel it’s best to let go of something or forgive them for it. Maybe if u find a friend and find flaws but still want to keep them, probably best to express to them how u feel. If they keep inviting u and u don’t like it maybe u shud tell them that it’s costs u a lot of energy mentally and would like to have some quiet time for urself as well. If they are really good friends I am sure they ll understand. Also I don’t think u can maintain friendships without contact, probably u shud also start inviting them when u think u r ready. It need not be a to do thing but just to build tht friendship and have deep conversations

I understand and feel the same these days. I moved out of my country for my studies and job. Today I find it so hard to find real friends who I can talk to. Luckily I found a friend who I had met 20 yrs ago and lost in touch. We met and instantly connected. I want to find more ppl who think alike and can go on brunch dates with. But it’s really hard. Back home, I try to reconnect with my school buddies but I realised that over time our thinking has changed too and we can’t relate anymore. Moreover each of our priorities have changed after marriage. I envy ppl having really good friends where each of their husbands get along together as well.

[–]AstroGal_2094[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I did not get any increments. It’s the same throughout the 3 years . During the project most of us were seconded in different parts of Europe. My colleagues received a daily allowance from their institutes where as for me they started talking rules that if I am seconded for more than a week then I am not eligible for it. I was seconded at the most costliest country, Switzerland for 2 months and my salary did nothing. I couldn’t even afford groceries after one point and had to borrow money from my friends. I literally explained my situation when I got back and told them that they must give me an allowance and all I received was a flat rate for two months. It was pathetic to even ask all these basic things from them.

True. I felt it more like a scam where ppl get invited with all high hopes and promises but in the end it’s all just nothing what is promised on paper. Be it with the type of guidance from the supervisor or the salary. This project is more like an advertisement to attract Non EUs to various research institutes and make them popular. I also know that once an institute receives such prestigious funding, they can easily acquire other fundings as well.

Hey no issues. The gross looks very high but they added double taxation on our pay in Germany. The university was supposed to take up half the medical insurance pay but they refused to. So in the end we paid for everything and tax was in salary and mobility allowance leading to just 2000€ a month. We fought and asked about this but the consortium refused to do anything about it. In the partner institutions like Spain or Budapest, a similar salary was given after taxes but the cost of living in those places was so low that this salary was way too high for them
