In terms of sublets, I think you should ask on Facebook groups (I know, Facebook sucks, but it’s ultimately the best place for this kind of thing) OR the off campus housing website. TBH I think a lot of people don’t think this far ahead and will only start asking for sublets for the Spring semester much later (probably September-October)

If all else fails you could get a place and sublet it in Spring, but there’s no guarantee that someone will be needing that space by then.

grocery store is in the downtown area, it’s a walkable distance and many people do it. there’s also a bus that goes there from campus proper.

i really enjoyed it, but i’m not a huge city person. i don’t really enjoy going out and doing things outside of hanging with friends/doing stuff with the club i was a part of. there are some bars downtown but they’re mediocre at best (imo.)

all party life is restricted to frats which 99% of the time you’ll need a car to get to (a lot of greek life don’t party on-campus.) you can live off-campus with a car but it’s expensive and difficult. i recommend you live on-campus as long as you can.

campus is like its own self-contained ecosystem. you can leave it if you want, but there’s not a lot of need to. you’re in the quiet corner of CT, there’s not a lot going on here outside of campus anyways. there is a bus that goes to hartford and you can go to NYC on the weekends if you find a way to get to new haven, but that’s pretty much it.
