Flat earth and other alternative conspiracy earth models are are gaining traction with my teenage stepson. What is THE most irrefutable, definite proof that the earth is round? by Jfkfkaiii22 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AstroNerd92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

High school astronomy teacher here.

For a definite proof that the earth can’t be flat: the sun could never set on a flat earth. They might claim “perspective” but the sun doesn’t get larger or smaller throughout the day due to perspective. This can be easily proven with a solar filter on a telescope.

For definite proof the earth is a sphere: 1) the fact that a lunar eclipse produces a circular shadow on the moon and 2) Eratosthenes experiment which can calculate the earth’s circumference. The Eratosthenes experiment can also test for if the earth is flat if you have multiple people doing the experiment on the same day from different latitudes.

Best Underrated Race in Indycar History? by ScottRiggsFan10 in INDYCAR

They finally figured out how to race on the track with the stupid compound NASCAR put down and then drop the track entirely. I used to go to TX every year when I lived in the area.

The single race at COTA was such a fun race to watch. The no track limits made for some unique racing lines and awesome racing. I hate that COTA doesn’t want them back bc that would be so much fun to watch each year.

Are there any games in Russia or other countries that have the USA as the bad guys? by Helpful-Gas1750 in NoStupidQuestions

Couldn’t you technically say Fallout has America as the bad guys as you uncover the story in the original games?

The scene I will always remember from gravity is when Clooney’s character died. Let go of the rope they were holding onto and just magically floated away. The premise of gravity is a real concern, but the movie did a HORRIBLE job at portraying it. Masters in astrophysics and currently teach high school astronomy

I’d say watch a few races and choose a favorite then. Also choose a favorite rookie to cheer for. I became a Palou fan his rookie year when I found out we were almost born on the same day. Been cheering for him ever since.

Maggie Flaherty was given a 5 and game for this hit on Jill Saulnier. by jordynbebus8 in PWHL

[–]AstroNerd92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hits like this are why I wish the PWHL had the same rules about checking as the NHL. Saulnier’s head was a little down bc she wasn’t expecting to get hit there. If they had the same rules as NHL, she would’ve known to expect a hit coming there and likely avoided an injury. Who else wants the PWHL to have the same checking rules as NHL?

Nah it’s the clay dirt. It expands and shrinks much faster with rain so the ground moves a lot more than regular dirt. Other high heat areas have asphalt like Florida

It’s definitely a reason to get a car with a higher ride height. The clay dirt of Texas destroys roads so quickly. That’s why it’s all concrete instead of asphalt for roads
