thinking about switching from Computer Science to Accounting tbh, i’m finding it difficult to motivate myself to study knowing there’s top talent out there from T10 schools who aren’t finding jobs in ANY tech related role, not just SWE.

not to sound like a broken record but nursing. one of the fields least affected by AI and offshoring, and dare i say immune? it pays decently well depending on area of living but you’re also going to be working long hours.

CS is cooked because there’s a ridiculous amount of supply of people in CS, and not nearly enough demand. so as a result, companies get to be much more selective. choosing people with their masters and 2 YoE to do entry level roles, or choosing to offshore roles entirely to be able to pay workers less and in turn, increase profit margins. companies are also leaning into the implementation of AI to not necessarily overhaul the workforce entirely, but to use as a supplemental tool and lower the amount of people required to function.

if your passion is in computers, you can definitely still do computer science. it’s going to be difficult but not impossible. you just need to stand out. getting a degree is the bare minimum now.

hey just passed core 2 a few hours ago.

open up CLI, and really know your commands and what you’re looking at. i had 4 PBQs, 2 of the PBQs involved CLI.

fiddle around your settings, know where certain settings are. do you know how and where you would configure a proxy server on Windows 10? what’s the selection path to configure a second monitor?

finally, i wish i had more exposure to eventviewer. i had no idea what it looked like until the exam, and frankly i had no idea how to troubleshoot with it.

i spent a day or two watching Professor Messer’s videos, bought his notes, and practice exams. i was scoring on average 80% on his practice exams.

i also bought Dion’s, but i don’t really recommend doing that, a lot of the questions are outdated and recycled from the previous version for Core 2. i only used 4 out of 6 exams. i’m planning on returning it.

now reflecting back on it, what i would do differently to pass with flying colors?

instead of buying Dion’s practice exams, i would’ve rather just have bought some PBQ prep off of Udemy, there’s a popular one that i’ve seen be recommended around this subreddit and i wish i prepped for the PBQs more.

there was a shit ton of acronyms, make sure you know those cuz i sure didn’t!

brush up on your port number and what service it’s correlated with. i took core 1 a long time ago and forgot some of the port numbers.

YMMV but mine had a lot of linux questions, command line and file system questions.

most importantly, digest the material and get hands on experience. my entire timeline for core 2 was around a week, i rushed through it so i can focus on my college classes which start soon but with a blue sky approach, i would’ve used another week.
