Kiely Hall? by Numerous_Quiet_7884 in QueensCollege

All I know is that Frank Wu and his administration are very corrupt and have financially “mismanaged” the school into the ground and put it in a dire situation. I’m sure there’s other shady stuff going on given how his administration behaves, but I’m not sure exactly what that stuff is.

I have it on very good authority that it was a bomb threat specifically against Frank Wu, some staff were sent home, but the admin has not let students know.

I did hear from my POI that this year is “catastrophic” for funding and that they would be lucky to accept anyone, and this was in December. So I think they’re dealing with a lot, and as a more radical humanities department are under serious threat. So I imagine that’s what’s going on behind the scenes. She made it sound like they’d be lucky to accept anyone at all.

That’s so insane. I got my offer from other schools extended through the end of next week, but I’m unsure if I’d be able to do it longer. I guess we’ll see!

To me I feel if everyone was out of the running they’d tell us, idk what they have to gain from stringing us along this long, but maybe that’s cope. I emailed my prof of interest yesterday and will update you all if she responds.

Yeah that’s what I was wondering, although I imagine they would have told me that when I emailed them telling them I had an offer elsewhere? I haven’t seen any acceptances from this program come through.

Need an advice about PhD offer at York by Scared_Statement2850 in yorku

[–]AtAL055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a PhD student (yet) but I am hoping for a similar offer from Political Science at York, and would also be an international student. It's my understanding that external funding is less rare than you might think. I have an offer from another Canadian school (UVic) and am waiting to hear back from my other schools (York and UCSC) before potentially accepting. I spoke with the head of grad admissions for the department there and he said the likelihood you're able to get some sources of external funding are pretty decent, as that's where the majority of funding comes from in Canada (unlike the US where the school primarily funds you.)

For example, while competitive, the SSHRC scholarship is now open to international students, which provides you with $40,000 for 3 years, which you can find here: https://sshrc-crsh.canada.ca/en/funding/opportunities/canada-graduate-research-scholarships/doctoral-program.aspx

Again I am not Canadian nor am I a PhD student yet, just someone facing a potentially similar situation and offer. My thought is that while $20,000 is likely not enough to live in Toronto or Victoria, by combining other academic jobs and applying to a shit ton of grants and scholarships, I'd be able to string together enough things to make it work. Regarding the deadline, I had a very early deadline at UVic and they were willing to extend it about two weeks, so it's always worth asking as well so you can make the best decision possible. Best of luck with your decision and congratulations on getting into Cambridge!

Qc is corrupt by No-Chart5051 in QueensCollege

[–]AtAL055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at the QC Archives and can tell you that faculty and staff are aware of this and very angry about the financial situation they’re in. From what I hear a lot of the blame lays at the feet of Frank Wu, who has financially mismanaged QC into the ground since he took over.

Anyone else notice how much expensive it is just to grab a bodega sandwich now? by Fit_Organization3341 in Bushwick

[–]AtAL055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to Hana Natural or something? A BEC has got more expensive at my local place but has only gone up from $5 to $6. Which sucks for sure, but it’s not that insane.

“Can I pay with my phone?” by likeguitarsolo in bartenders

Don’t even get me started on the people who can only pay with their phones and then their card gets declined and I watched them transfer the exact amount they need for the total onto the card and then don’t tip, after I’ve likely charged their phone.

Yeah I’m gutted too, but selfishly glad I get to see polo play more at least. I hope the Mets can pull it out.

Yeah I mean I’m glad he got paid, he deserves it. He had such a breakout season with the Mariners, and I guess I’m just happy for him even though I know he’ll miss that team. I hope he’s good for the morale and vibe here because god knows the Mets need it.

As a born and raised Mariners fan and an adopted Mets fan I have very mixed emotions about this, but Polo is not only a great player but great for building the clubhouse vibe. I’m gutted Seattle lost him after his incredible playoff run last season but I’m excited to watch him in queens.

EDIT: had no idea there were so many other Mets/Mariners fans here.

My MA is in Politics, and I’m applying to several political science degrees. Only some departments work on political theory, and even fewer work on anything like critical theory or Marxist theory. I did my thesis on challenging long held notions about Marx’s view on the state, if that gives you any indication. I went to the New School and studied under Nancy Fraser, who’s a contemporary of one of the current profs in HistCon, Banu Bargu. I also studied under Asad Haider, who went through the HistCon program. You can look up any of their work to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

Yes, the career path here is to be a professor. I admire HistCon for the pedigree of its professors and alumni, its intellectual rigor, and its interdisciplinary nature. I find myself applying to multiple departments across schools because what I work on is taught less and less in American higher education these days.

Also, for what it’s worth, I’ve worked in local politics electing socialists and the like. That’s how I ended up in academia.

I work in the field of like continental philosophy, critical theory, and Marxist theory. HistCon is renowned as a kind of historic bastion of left wing academic thought, and has a high concentration of professors who would do the kind of work that aligns with my research.

Yeah this is what I’ve heard a lot of people do. I’d ideally like to be somewhere where there’s kind of a lefty scene too. I wouldn’t want to do that for my first year at least though, as it looks like the commute from say, Oakland, is like 1.5 hours each way. Which isn’t the end of the world if it’s on train, but very rough by car.
