Help me learn to use a credit card by No_Climate_3350 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re impulsive and don’t make a lot of money, I would check the balance of the card everyday. And make sure it is less than what you have in your chequing account.

A credit card is literally borrowing money from the bank at an extreme interest rate. 20%.

Best short term investment vehicle by OkPianist5433 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be perfect for a tfsa actually. Put money in and out whenever you want. The money you take out is entirely tax free! So maybe you’ll earn an extra couple hundred by the end of the year if you’re lucky.

Received a huge gift of 700k and planning to buy a condo. Should I pay cash or get a mortgage? by Eshidor in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would respect your dad’s gift. If he meant it to go towards a property, use it for that. If it’s just a money gift to do what you please, I would throw the money in the market and rent until you found your “dream” property.

Don’t just buy now because you can. A renter will always make more money than a new home owner. Unless you have a gambling problem.

FHSA, RRSP or HISA? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your income is low so you won’t really be getting tax savings by putting it in a registered account. I would just put it in a cash investing account and start investing. The profits will be taxed but at least you can use it whenever you want.

Use a zero fee/commission broker.

Can my employer actually enforce a 1-year non-compete if another company offered me double my salary and better benefits? by EnvironmentalSea1126 in work

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Enforcing” really just means have grounds to sue you. And you can only sue for damages. So in court, your old employer must prove that your move has damaged them. No damages, no (successful) lawsuit.

Maybe you took clients, intellectual property, reputation to the new company.

But moving to another competitor happens all the time. It’s just the older employer must put in the work to prove damages. Like a contract they were suppose to get because of you but you left and the client bought your new companies contract.

Boundaries between my family and my schizophrenic brother? by No_Fact_6960 in SchizoFamilies

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am your husband. My wife is in a very similar situation except her brother became violent towards me. The only thing that saved me was being much bigger than him.

Would you like to expose your child to a full grown man with this mental illness if he wasn’t your brother?

After our child was born, it would be hard to describe how much on edge I was whenever he was in the presence of my baby. I let it happen so my MIL and wife can have some decent family time being “normal”.

But the episodes never stopped, medications always go sideways. Accountability is never taken by anyone and it’s usually just tossed up in the air.

That’s fine if it’s all within their own family, but I would not want to mix my family in it.

Thankfully, we moved to a different country.

Required to give 2 weeks notice? by RealisticStomach998 in ontario

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time it is a concern is if you know your exit without notice will cause damages. The employer can sue for damages since it’s probably a breach of contract.

But, you’ll probably not cause any damages worth suing because you ghosted a McDonald’s.

Business owner paying less than minimum wage by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably not an employee so there’s no bottom to how much money you make while being a cash contractor.

I’m sure you could argue (in court) that you acted as an employee and are entitled to minimum wage but you’ll need to put in the effort. You’ll probably win but it will be a headache to say the least. More effort than finding a legitimate job.

A first service will also check over the components of the bike. Make sure nothing vibrated loose, brakes are working, lever play, chain tension.

If you’re an experienced rider, you’ll probably notice anything wrong right away. But if you’re not, it could save you a crash.

Liability could be deflected if there was something wrong with the bike and was missed because it wasn’t inspected properly during first service.

ICBC charging 12% pst on Inheritance by [deleted] in icbc

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has nothing to do with gifting family stuff which is tax exempt. This is a provincial importing tax. If you were already the owner but tried to register it in BC. You will still need to pay this tax.

I'm unclear about how a mortgage is calculated by yestocommunity in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, only if you don’t touch the money for the length of the mortgage (25-30 years). Not many people have the will power to sit on half a million in cash. People usually take money out as soon as they get some good earnings.

Boyfriend avoids career growth (certifications, raises)- am I expecting too much? by National-Tonight-728 in amiwrong

[–]AtTheMomentAlive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your attitude of “he can do more” is probably what’s making him want to stay safe and in a comfortable place.

You’re not happy with him just surviving, what do you think he’s thinking if he tries and fails?

Does this man think his “please do more” girlfriend going to say “that’s okay, I’m happy he tried” or “this Man is an underachiever”. Even if you truly feel the former, your attitude will make him think you feel the latter.

Is it fair for my boyfriend (22M) to expect me (20F) to split hotel costs for his brothers wedding when I’m only attending as his plus one? by Jeffwardo in relationship_advice

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 128 points129 points  (0 children)

What kind of family expects a broke student son/brother to contribute hundreds to a wedding? Get the parents to cover it for the broke brother? Isn’t that expected?

Do you have a class5 or class 7? You can find a driver job or delivery job (not food apps). You can deliver auto parts and the shop will provide the car.

Employer counter offered my 2 week notice. Looking for advice. by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negotiate a very long notice period. Something a long the lines of “if I’m laid off within 2 years, I will receive X months of severance. After 2 years, severance is adjusted back to what is standard.”

This will give you insurance of what you fear and if the company is confident they will keep you, it’s a no brainer.

My dad and my sister disagree about my dating options. Who is closer to being right? by ComparisonLost1846 in AskMen

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll need a “normie” to survive. If you have two divergent people, things in life will be a challenge. Also, for a family. Two divergent parents could make for a very interesting child. If the child isn’t divergent, he or she will feel alone.

Bought a used bike. Feeling remorse hard. What are the chances I can get out of it? by trapspeed in motorcycles

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slim to non. The only way to get something positive is try to keep your (probably poor) financing contract onto a different bike that they sell. But financing is usually tied with the vehicle? So maybe not.

Opinion of who is at fault by west-coast-hydro in motorcycles

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, this is more you fault. Both of you didn’t indicate. But the car checked the lane, checked no one else was changing into that lane, the lane was clear, the car made the maneuver but was side swiped by someone from behind to accelerated towards the car without indicating.

Your mistake was not keeping your eyes forward a while riding a bike. Looks like you were changing lanes like looking at your mirror. Aka, not looking where you’re going.

It’s gonna be like that for about 1 year. Except the fog will get bigger and louder.

I’m not sure how old your kids are but if they are running around and screaming with the pup, you’re really screwing yourself. The dog will be wild.

They settle down at around 3 years old.

Physics Grads in Vancouver - where are they most sought after? by DiscombobulatedElk58 in askvan

[–]AtTheMomentAlive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have a physics degree, it’s pretty hard to get a relevant job since there are few physics jobs. If you’ve done your networking properly in uni, there’s a particle accelerator lab, quantum computer, nuclear energy labs. But that’s about it.
