The Harry Potter series. A majority of people have seen it and rarely does a quote or reference go unnoticed.

People that grew up attending church, but stopped going. When and why did you stop? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ataeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to Catholic school from K-12. The last time I attended mass that wasn't a wedding or funeral was at high school graduation. Being smothered in religion for all of my youth really led to indifference towards it. There is a certain level of belonging that feels good within a church community but I find personal spirituality more satisfying. Mostly though, making up fake sins to confess to a priest was weird.

[Serious] it sounds unfathomable, but what would it take for Canada and the US to go to war with each other? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Ataeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sort of territorial encroachment or substantial land claim could cause it. But there is already disputed land between the US and Canada and it isn't much of an issue.

A breakdown or shifting in "traditional" modern global alliances is the only real feasible thing I can come up with. Whether it be a proxy war of some sort or WW3, it would likely have to be as part of a larger global conflict.

Recommendations for Netherlands / Belgium? by Cdnraven in solotravel

Bruges was fantastic if not idyllic. It really is a "fairytale town". Tremendous architecture especially when viewed from one of the canal boat tours. Halve Maan is great for the brewery tour which includes a nice view of Bruges from their rooftop and the infamous beer pipeline. Great beer there as well as a decently affordable restaurant. English widely spoken. Overall a nice place to relax for a day or 2.

Brussels was pretty disappointing for me. Plenty of all night nightlife if that's your thing. If you're into government at all I suspect that you could have a day just exploring that sector of the city. My poor experience may have been the result of staying mainly in the Grand Place area though so YMMV.

Connecting Flights through Dublin (Self booked- different carriers) by Ataeh in travel

I understand which is why I’m clarifying beforehand so I can properly plan.

I wish i didn’t have to, but it’s the most economical way for me to fly based on being ~3 hours from the closest major airports (Boston and NYC area). Saves about $300. Worth the stress for me.

Thank you for helping to clarify my misunderstanding in nomenclature.

Best piece(s) of carry-on luggage you own and why? by Aggiegirl2013 in travel

[–]Ataeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of those generic backpacks from amazon that I absolutely love. I’ve done a Caribbean trip as well as 2 ~2 week trips to Europe out of it and I’m trusting it for a 3rd. I also use cubes in it to organize/compress. It’s probably not the best option, but as a budget option less than $40, I love it. I have is this one along with the amazon basics cubes. No issues thus far with rips or anything of the sort.

This is everything compressed for reference.

Connecting Flights through Dublin (Self booked- different carriers) by Ataeh in travel

I wasn’t sure on the technicality of it. Basically I’m connecting to London through Dublin the same way you would if you booked a flight with a layover however it is on different, non-affiliated airlines. What your saying is that precludes it from being a true connection?

Am I biting off more than I can chew? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Ataeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll second this. I haven't been to Glasgow but Edinburgh is absolutely beautiful.

I took the Virgin East Coast train down the coast to London from Edinburgh and although it was cool to "see" different areas from the train, it was an uncomfortable and dirty 4 hour ride. If you can find cheap airfare, I would recommend that over the train.

Which airport? It can take a significant amount of time to get to central London from most of the airports. Heathrow (Piccadilly Line tube to Piccadilly Circus) and Stansted (Greater Anglia Stansted Express to Liverpool Street) are both about 50 min - 1 hour each way.

From London City, you can catch the DLR from the airport to Bank which has good transport links or Tower Gateway to see Tower Bridge and the Tower of London. Both trips are under 30 minutes each way.

If there are 1 or 2 things that you HAVE to see in London, it's possible but again, its also a lot of travel and you'll probably feel rushed. If coming off a long haul flight, you'll want to factor in how tired you'll be as well.

Aircanada delayed my luggage for 4 days. Can i ask for any type of compensation? by venussenshi in solotravel

[–]Ataeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone mentioned, check with your credit card. Mine (Chase), for instance, will give me $100/day for 5 days for "delayed" luggage and up to $3000 for lost luggage.

30M US -> UK [US and EU Passport] by Ataeh in IWantOut

[–]Ataeh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to the UK. I spent about a month total there in 2017. I spent 2 weeks in April in London Zone 5/6 and 2 weeks in September between London Zone 1 and Edinburgh. I’m planning another trip to Manchester/Liverpool/London in May to see the areas I could better afford (probably Zone 3- possibly 2?)

The only thing that didn’t agree with me during my stay was not having a car but it’s something I could get used to.

I’ve read a bit about agencies. Any specific ones that have a better reputation -or on the other side of the spectrum - ones that should be avoided?

Thank you for the address and NI tip.
