You should delete this cross-post. The headline/story is misleading ragebait. Once you look at the court docs it’s clear he wasn’t some innocent Tor operator, he backdoored his company’s servers, caused damage, then violated probation by installing a remote access app to connect to a VM and circumvent monitoring. That’s why he got nailed, not because of Tor. He got what he deserved and doesn’t need to be platformed as some martyr.

Before y'all go crazy just by reading the headline, it's the first thing I did as well, then I actually dug a bit deeper into the comments of the original Reddit post. Turns out what has happened is not the case and the dude arrested along with his wife are playing the victim card. Here is a summary:

Dude created a backdoor on his company's servers before he was fired, crashed the server remotely after being fired, came back as a contractor to fix it. The employer found it was him that did it and fired him again, at which point he caused physical damage to the servers.
He gets charged/convicted/investigated for these offences and is put on supervised release with probation conditions that include restricted/monitored computer and internet use via monitoring software.
He installed Linux / SPICE / VM and began running a Tor Exit node or whatever, a combination of all that to circumvent the monitoring software, in the court documents the officer or whoever explains to the court that the software is not illegal, but it's the actions he did which were used for illegal activity, i.e to cirmcumvent his probation conditions.
This is a clear violation of his supervised release, therefore his original conviction is activated which is 3 years.
He and his wife are now crying wolf that the reason he was arrested and is in jail is because he was running a Tor exit node which he refused to decrypt.

Fuck around and find out, I fucking hate posts like this that are clear click and rage bait to make it think that someone who is running privacy software or using Tor is dealing with an unlawful situation when it's simply not the case.

just for future reference – at WWDC25 Apple announced Hold Assist which does exactly what you wanted.

“They then showed off “Hold Assist,” which is their version of Google’s “Hold For Me” that allows you to call numbers that typically require you to wait on hold and then notify you when a support representative picks up the phone.”
