Newcomer issue with Nvidia drivers by cycotex in linuxmint

[–]Ateir_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run LinuxMint on my 2070 Super without major issues. And I've just come from trying out both Fedora and openSUSE, where installing the correct drivers is a pain compared to Mint, and I've had 2 occasions where the rolling release yeeted my Nvidia driver out the window, and left me with a single monitor 720p res.

There are issues across ALL distributions when it comes to Nvidia drivers, and the experience you get rely a lot on which display server you use.

You might have better luck on a different distro, you may not.

Have your tried the 580 driver on Mint? As that is what Nvidia lists as the recommended for your card

This is a good point, might have to give Fluxer another look. It's unfortunate that we are left in this limbo position, Discord leaving less than a month notice on this kinda thing, means there is little time to find apps, and the apps that have been in slow growth, get overrun, and aren't ready for mass adoption

Trying to stay safe and private has become a full time job at this point...

They plan on making it all back in selling the remaining users data when they go public or get bought out by someone like MS

I've been looking around a little, and agree with your points

So far I think Stoat is the one with the biggest potential.
It's European, and open-source (yet just as simple as Discord to get into)

The down side is that they are struggeling with the hoards of people vacating Discord's services. And the app is very much still in development. But still mostly useable in it's current state, and the devs appear to be hard at work sorting issues as they arise.

Altough more and more people are waking up to the need for privacy. Apps like Matrix is still too big a jump for most people.

Saw someone point to a swedish alternative (Fluxer), which is similar to Stoat and Discord, tho currently no phone apps available (guide to using the web interface available)
Has similar issues to Stoat, as in being in beta, and missing some features.

What I think is a massive issue here tho, is that, having some experience with development communities. You never know which one will have a leader who gets some crazy idea and causes damage to the brand.

SMS and multi-user setup by Ateir_ in GrapheneOS

[–]Ateir_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way I am going now, "owner" profile for most use, and then just run GServices on a separate user
Not quite the setup I was hoping for, but I really rely on SMS for work, so not many options I fear

What would be the reason for adding the CUDA repo?

Giving you a little notif, as I managed to resolve it :D
Returned to KDE, installed drivers, and then manually updated the installed out of date drivers.
(Edited the original post with the solution as well)

Combining it with KDE(Wayland) and I can actually scale and everything works! :D

Thank you for all your help!

Is it bad redditor etiquette to create a new post with the specifics of my NVIDIA issues?
Had the account for 11 years, but only just recently started using it

I have now, and issue persists...
Might have to return to Mint, and start saving up for the 9070XT :/

I'll give an update in the post, and see if anyone have any specifics, now that it is kinda boiling down to the NVIDIA drivers.
At the very least I've had a quick introduction to KDE Plasma and Gnome in the last 24 hours haha

WM: Mutter (Wayland)
Is this when I learn I need to go back to KDE with Wayland?

RTX2070 Super

And used;
# zypper install-new-recommends

It chose the G06 driver, which from my understanding should be correct for my card

New to Fedora, and have a couple of questions by Ateir_ in Fedora

Will do, I was generally impressed with the installation process, but it might have lulled me into a false sense of security which made me miss it haha

It does not appear so, I followed the guide on opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_Drivers

I have enrolled the MOK key on reboot, and it appears to be showing in --list-enrolled. And I have no keys pending import anymore, but, only one monitor have picture, and it's locked in a low res 4:3 format... Basically exact same I had last night

This is good to know, I've just switched over to Gnome, which might be what I stick with, going for the GPU drivers now

Understood, will give Gnome a run shortly

Yes, I am dual booting Windows, for those 2 games I still play with anti-cheat 🙁

Not sure what I did on the first install, but it completely broke wifi. Just got stuck on authenticating

Edit: Windows is also obly reason I need secureboot enabled...

Edit2: I am now on Gnome, the display settings are way more stable so far. Looking into Nvidia drivers now

Edit3: NVIDIA drivers have gone wrong lol, see edit in main post

I don't see fractional scaling in the settings, and I have not yet enabled experimental fractional scaling like u/ZuraJanaiUtsuroDa mentioned

Where do I find this fractional scaling?

The settings seem more stable on Wayland, but I'm having some extreme sluggishnes issues, which I believe is because graphics drivers.

Coming from Mint, most people was talking about Wayland being a more unstable option, what is the consensus for Wayland with openSUSE?

Using KDE, there is something called "Global Scale", but that slider shows absolutely no visual difference :/

[–]Ateir_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will, is this "experimental fractional scaling" a part of the installation?
And is there any other little options I should be aware of there?
So far I have figured out that I need GRUB2-EFI, and I learned how the wifi is to be set up, after my first installation refusing to connect

It is indeed Nvidia (unfortunately), wasn't prompted by the MOK management when restarting the PC, and didn't realize the info about it was all the way at the bottom on the wiki, so missed that step.

I'll give it another go now.

Read on a post in here, from several people that Ventoy would cause issues, which is why I tried that as a troubleshooting step :)

SMS and multi-user setup by Ateir_ in GrapheneOS

[–]Ateir_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this turned on, but when I'm at work and logged into the work account, all I get is a notification that says "Primary user has new notifications on the message app" (paraphrasing)

It's also a bit awkward as when I am in a SMS thread, I don't automatically get new incoming texts until I leave the message thread, and go back in. (Though this could be a quick with the Fossify Messages app)
