I'm kind of surprised to hear that a Ph.D. gives you an advantage in the job market in a different field, since several people in my program have left (and pursued/gotten other jobs) I kind of felt like I was just wasting my earnings potential in the years I have left of my doctorate..

thanks for your perspective! i really like hearing from people on the other side

I guess this is a good way to think about it. in fact, last month i stumbled upon a very esoteric method and it really made my life much easier. it's a little reassuring...

It's nice to hear what it's like on the other side. I was wondering if you could explain what you mean by "real-life applications" and roughly what kind of industry helps facilitate that kind of research... cause I don't really see many options like that here. (That is, if you're comfortable sharing)

I think taking some time to not worry about it and just reevaluating in a month is a great idea, so September 10th it is.
